Motorcycles can damage iPhone cameras

Those who like to use their iPhone on a motorcycle, for example as an action cam or navigation system, should be careful. According to Apple, the vibrations of the ride can permanently damage the image stabilization and autofocus mechanics of iPhones.

Damage from vibrations

In a new support document, Apple warns against using iPhones while riding “heavily motorized motorcycles.” According to the manufacturer, the vibrations can cause permanent damage if the iPhone is mounted on the handlebars while riding.

Especially the optical image stabilization, but also the autofocus functions are at risk when the smartphone is exposed to particularly strong vibrations over a longer period of time. Use on the handlebar would cause vibrations, which are then transmitted directly to the smartphone.

The iPhone 6 Plus and the iPhone 6s are affected, as well as all devices from the iPhone 7 onwards, some of which have been on the market for around three years. It is unclear why Apple is issuing a warning so late. It is also uncertain whether the newly launched iPhone 13 is still at risk.

Apple also does not reveal details about the affected motorcycles or the corresponding power class, but it talks about “high-powered motorcycle engines”, which is why slower two-wheelers like e-bikes, mopeds or scooters should not be affected.

Apple therefore recommends against regular, long-term use of iPhones on motorcycles to minimize the risk of damage.
