NAS from Western Digital: Support is discontinued

NAS devices from Western Digital are especially popular with home users. Owners of an older NAS or cloud storage from Western Digital have now been informed that support for My Cloud OS 3 will be discontinued. An update to the new operating system is recommended, but there is a problem.

NAS from Western Digital: Older devices not compatible

Anyone who uses a NAS device from Western Digital has probably received an unpleasant email in recent days. In it, the manufacturer informs that support for its own operating system My Cloud OS 3 will be discontinued.

The servers required for certain functions are taken offline, so that the devices can only be used in the local network. An update to the current operating system My Cloud OS 5 is strongly recommended.

As of April 15, 2022, these devices will only be usable on the local network, and features with Internet access such as email notification, remote access, security updates or technical support will be completely discontinued. WD recommends creating a full backup of data and disabling the connection to the Internet. Users should also make sure to use a secure password.

MyCloud OS 3 with security vulnerabilities

The problem: MyCloud OS 3 has serious security vulnerabilities and is easily attackable on the Internet. Hackers can easily access the data remotely and delete all data via reset.

Especially older NAS devices from Western Digital are not compatible with the new operating system. Western Digital also does not seem to be interested in fixing the security vulnerabilities and therefore only recommends updating to the new version of the system. For most devices, however, an update is possible.

Most notably, the first generation My Cloud and My Cloud Mirror NAS devices are no longer compatible. So even the first models of the MyCloud EX2 series have to be sorted out, so to speak. According to Western Digital, customers with these devices will receive a voucher in January 2022 that gives them a 20% discount on a new device.
