Although Sony’s PlayStation 5 console is still struggling with supply problems, the manufacturer has circulated a hardware revision of the launch variant. The new PS5 model is around 300 grams lighter and relies on a more frugal cooling solution.
PlayStation 5 saves on cooling
The hardware revision of the PlayStation 5 console will soon completely replace the launch model. Until now, it was unclear how Sony had managed the lower weight (around 300 grams less than the original model). A teardown of the new variant now shows that the Japanese apparently skimped on the cooling – which could potentially have fatal consequences.
As YouTube user Austin Evans shows on his channel in the comparison teardown of both PS5 variants, there are big differences in the cooling system of the two console revisions. Especially the heatsink of the new PS5 has been significantly reduced, which results in a correspondingly lower weight. In general, the inner workings of both models differ quite a bit from each other.

At the same time, however, Evans notes that Sony’s cost-cutting measure is already clearly noticeable in operation. Compared to the original model, the air that is blown out of the case is around three to five degrees warmer. Whether this will have an impact on the PS5’s performance and the console’s longevity is not yet clear. However, it is also conceivable that no effects will be felt during use.
