Ricoh Theta X: 360-degree camera with touchscreen and 5.7K resolution unveiled

Manufacturer Ricoh has introduced the Theta X, a new edition of the 360-degree camera that looks a lot like the already available Theta Z1. The most important innovations of the Ricoh Theta X include a large LCD touch panel, a replaceable battery and two new 48-megapixel sensors.

Ricoh is adding a new model to its lineup of 360-degree camerars that looks a lot like the Z1. The first visible difference, however, is a 2.25-inch touchscreen on the front of the cam for easier operation.

The LCD touch panel is used to operate the camera and navigate through and view captured photos. In addition, the touchscreen can be used to make all the fine adjustments to the image without having to resort to the corresponding smartphone app.

The Ricoh Theta X is also supposed to be a noticeable update to the manufacturer’s previous top model in terms of image quality. In combination with the 48-megapixel cameras on both sides of the handy device, still images with a resolution of 60 megapixels are supposed to be merged into a 360-degree image. The resolution is 11,008 x 5,504 pixels, which is equivalent to an 11K image.

360-degree videos, on the other hand, are possible in 5.7K resolution (5,760 x 2,880 pixels) and at a frame rate of 30 FPS. 4K recordings, on the other hand, are even possible at 60 frames per second. Ricoh also promises improved image stabilization compared to the other models.

Replaceable battery and microSD card slot

As the first 360-degree camera in the series, the Ricoh Theta X also features a replaceable battery. The rechargeable battery (DB-110) has a capacity of 1,350 mAh. The camera is charged via USB Type-C.

With dimensions of 51.7mm x 136.2mm x 29.0mm (width x height x depth) and a weight of 144 grams for the body alone, the Theta X is both compact and lightweight. Even with the battery and microSD card, the camera weighs only 170 grams. There are 46 gigabytes available internally for storing pictures and videos, while all microSD cards with UHS-I interface can be used for expansion.

Images and videos are processed directly on the camera, and transfer to the corresponding smartphone app or PC is also possible. Other features include GPS, a mono microphone, Bluetooth 5.0 and WiFi communication in accordance with IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.

Price and Availability

The Ricoh Theta X is expected to be available in stores in March 2022. The manufacturer’s MSRP is 999.00 euros. This makes the 360-degree camera just as expensive as Ricoh’s Theta Z1.
