Samsung presents gaming monitor Odyssey Neo G9

Samsung wants to change the gaming industry with the Odyssey Neo G9 monitor: It is the first 49-inch curved model with Quantum Mini LEDs on the market. Even away from the sheer size, Samsung is visibly striving to outdo the competition with the new device.

Quantum Mini LEDs in 2,048 zones

The Quantum mini LEDs in 2,048 zones are the main innovation of the device, which clearly sets it apart from the previous model. The small LEDs are placed in a very large number behind the display and thus allow an almost millimeter-precise brightness control, which is especially useful for playing HDR content. The predecessor only had ten such zones.

The luminosity of the mini-LEDs is also supposed to be outstanding: According to Samsung, they reach peak brightness values of 2,000 cd/m². However, the average brightness of the device is 420 cd/m² like in the predecessor. A significant difference, however, results in terms of the contrast ratio, which is due to the much finer LED grid and the thus increased possibilities of brightness adjustment. In HDR mode, it is supposed to be 1,000,000:1, which is an outstandingly high value for an LCD monitor.

In terms of resolution and refresh rate, however, the device does not set itself apart from its predecessor. Thus, it resolves with a screen diagonal of 49 inches with 5,120 x 1,440 pixels and offers a refresh rate of 240 Hz. Like its predecessor, the curvature of the monitor is 1000R, making it relatively pronounced.

More ports

In terms of connections, however, the device can once again set itself apart: The options have noticeably increased here. Thus, the Odyssey Neo G9 is equipped with a DisplayPort 1.4 port, two HDMI 2.1 and two USB ports, as well as a port for headphones.

Price and Availability

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 will be available from the Samsung online store starting July 29. It will start shipping on August 9. The price will be 2,539 Euros.
