Samsung’s NVMe SSD 990 PRO Heatsink Available Now

Samsung has announced the availability of its NVMe SSD 990 PRO Heatsink, an extension of the NVMe SSD 990 PRO series introduced in the spring. This SSD is specifically designed for graphically demanding games and performance-intensive applications such as 3D rendering, 4K video editing and data analytics.

Improved heat dissipation

Unlike the normal Samsung 990 Pro, which only has a sticker with copper foil for improved heat dissipation, the new 990 Pro Heatsink is equipped with an aluminum heatsink. According to Samsung’s own tests at 25 °C room temperature, this is said to reduce the temperature by up to 16 °C during sequential read and by up to 12 °C during sequential write. However, actual results may vary depending on the case and ventilation.

Compatibility and customization

The 990 Pro Heatsink is also suitable for the PlayStation 5, as the cooler is only 8.2mm tall, allowing it to fit into the game console’s expansion slot. In addition, the cooler is equipped with RGB LED light strips that provide visual appeal. The Samsung Magician 7.2 software can be used to customize the lighting.

Performance and Price

The 990 Pro Heatsink’s performance numbers remain high, with maximum speeds of 7,450 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write. The recommended retail price for the new 990 Pro Heatsink is around 160 euros for 1 TB and 250 euros for 2 TB. The variant without cooler is currently available from 124 euro (1 TB) and 208 euro (2 TB). However, the surcharge for the cooler should drop when it is widely available. Outlook

Samsung had also promised a version with 4 TB of storage for 2023. But there is no new information about this model so far.
