SSD prices in a nosedive: Save big until the end of the year

SSD prices continue to fall sharply. Market researchers already forecast lower prices for the first quarter of 2022 but prices are expected to continue falling sharply until the end of 2022. Discounts of 15-20 percent in the fourth quarter of 2022 are considered likely.

SSD prices drop dramatically

Everything is getting more expensive? Not necessarily, because SSD prices are moving in the opposite direction. Researchers were already predicting significantly falling costs for storage at the beginning of the year, and this trend will continue throughout 2022.

Components for NAND flash are available in abundance, the warehouses are bulging. This ensures that prices will continue to move downward for the remainder of the year. Market researchers at TrendForce expect prices to continue to drop significantly in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Buyers had drastically reduced their orders in the middle of the year, which already led to a reduction in prices for wafers of 30-35 percent in the third quarter. Accordingly, manufacturers’ inventories are full, so prices for NAND flash could fall by 15-20 percent in the fourth quarter.

Most NAND flash products, combined with low prices, could become a real loss-making business for manufacturers before the end of the year, market researchers added. As a result, some vendors may cut production to keep losses in check.

High price discounts expected

In the end customer segment, SSD storage solutions with a capacity of 512 GB in particular have emerged as the most popular format. Accordingly, a particularly large amount has been produced here, so SSD prices are expected to fall the most for this storage capacity.

At the same time, however, the supply of enterprise solutions is to be increased due to the decreased demand for end customer SSDs. Here, too, price reductions of 15-20 percent are expected in the fourth quarter. eMMC storage for Chromebooks, smart TVs and other devices is also expected to become cheaper, with price discounts of 13-18 percent expected here by the end of the year.

In summary, the market researchers from TrendForce forecast significantly falling SSD prices for the year-end business in 2022 across all segments. If you look at the price development of various SSD models in Germany, a clear trend emerges here.

For example, the popular Samsung SSD 980 Pro (our review) with 1 TB storage capacity was still priced at over 200 Euros on January 01, 2022, whereas the model according to the price comparison is currently already available from 116.55 Euros. The same applies to other manufacturers’ versions.
