Tesla: autonomous driving becomes cheaper

If you want to experience the futuristic feeling of autonomous driving in a Tesla, you can do so in parts with the “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) subscription. The US manufacturer has now significantly reduced the prices for the autonomous driving mode.

Tesla to focus on autonomous driving in 2024

In the field of electromobility, it is no longer just parameters such as the range and engine power of the electric car that play a decisive role. Autonomous driving is also still a major topic for manufacturers. Tesla is no different. Just last week, it was announced that the US manufacturer plans to unveil its first self-driving cabs in the summer of 2024.

At the moment, you could almost get the feeling that the company, under the leadership of CEO Elon Musk, wants to declare 2024 the year of autonomous driving. After all, the price for FSD has now been reduced from 199 US dollars to 99 US dollars per month in the USA. Behind Full Self-Driving is Level 2 autonomous driving.

What could also speak in favor of the price reduction is the pricing policy for the somewhat less extensive “Autopilot” driving assistant. This feature is now available as standard in every Tesla. Previously, you had to pay 99 US dollars for this as well. Is someone already making room in their own price list for an assistant that offers level 3?

A turning point in the company’s history?

But there may be other reasons for the price reduction. As Tesla is currently experiencing a noticeable decline in sales figures after many years of riding a great wave of success, the company seems to want to open up new profit channels as quickly as possible. It is clear that the price reduction has not gone down too well with the authorities. After all, they have been expressing safety concerns about the FSD feature for some time.

In recent months and years, there have been several tragic accidents in the USA in connection with Tesla’s driving assistants. In addition, the manufacturer has repeatedly had to remedy software faults for its customers as part of recall campaigns. If significantly more Tesla drivers now rely on the support of FSD, this could in turn lead to an increase in the accident rate.
