Tolino Shine 5, Tolino Shine, Shine Color und Vision Color: Neue E-Book-Reader

Tolino e-book readers are among the most popular models in Germany. With the Tolino Shine 5, Tolino Shine, Shine Color and Vision Color, the manufacturer has now introduced three new models, two of which feature a color display.

Tolino Shine 5 with Bluetooth and better display

Around a year and a half after its predecessor, the Tolino Shine 5 replaces model number four. It is based on a 6-inch E-Ink-Carta display, which should ensure excellent readability. The manufacturer promises that reading on the high-resolution black and white touchscreen should feel almost like reading a printed book page.

the 112 mm x 160 mm x 9.1 mm e-reader weighs 173 grams and has a resolution of 1,448 x 1,072 pixels with 300 ppi. There are also improvements in the processor area. The MediaTEK MT8113L with 1.0 GHz is used here, which in combination with 512 MB RAM should ensure a significantly higher speed than its predecessor.

Another new feature is the integration of Bluetooth 5.0, which makes it easy to transfer audio books from the 16 GB internal memory or 25 GB cloud storage to headphones, for example. Dual-band Wi-Fi is also included. In terms of formats, the Tolino Shine 5 supports ePub with and without DRM, PDF and TXT files, MOBI, CBR, CBZ, JPEG and PNG.

Tolino Shine Color brings color into play

For those who prefer a more colorful look, the Tolino Shine Color is the perfect companion. It also uses a 6-inch E-Ink Kaleido 3 display with a resolution of 1,448 x 1,072 pixels, but allows content to be displayed in color. However, the pixel density drops to 150 ppi for color content.

The new color display can display content such as illustrated children’s books, cookbooks, travel guides, reference books, mangas and comics better than a black and white screen. The Color model shares the remaining specifications with the Shine 5, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a week-long battery life. The processor and memory are also identical, as are the dimensions and weight.

Tolino Vision Color and Stylus with 7-inch display

At 144.6 mm x 161 mm x 8.3 mm, the Tolino Vision Color is slightly larger and, at 200g, also heavier. This is mainly due to the larger display, which combines a screen diagonal of 7 inches with a resolution of 1,274 x 1,680 and also displays content in color or black and white.

Like the Epos 3, it also has an ergonomic grip bar and scroll buttons and automatically adjusts the display to the left or right hand. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are of course also on board, while the 2,050 mAh battery is significantly larger than that of the other models (1,500 mAh).

The processor also gets significantly more power with two 2.0 GHz cores and 1 GB of RAM. The internal memory has also been increased to 32 GB.

The new Tolino Stylus also allows you to make handwritten markings and annotations in e-books and create notes. It can also be used to create diary entries, drawings or to-do lists and convert them into digital text.

Prices and availability

The Tolino Shine 5 and Tolino Shine Color e-readers will go on sale on May 7, but can already be pre-ordered from participating bookstores such as bücher.de, eBook.de, Thalia or Weltbild. The Shine 5 has an RRP of 119.00 euros, the Shine Color 149.00 euros.

The Tolino Vision Color and Tolino Stylus will then follow from June 2024 at prices of 199.00 euros and 69.99 euros for the separately available stylus.
