watchOS 10: Apple Watch receives extensive update

Apple unveiled the tenth version of its operating system for the Apple Watch, watchOS 10, at WWDC 2023. One of the most striking innovations is the revision of the user interface. The native apps have been given a new design that makes the most of the larger display sizes of the newer Apple Watch models. In addition, the so-called “Smart Stack” has been introduced, which displays relevant widgets exactly when they are needed.

Widgets: a new beginning

Another highlight of watchOS 10 is the return of widgets. By rotating the digital crown, users can now pop up widgets that provide quick access to information. This is reminiscent of the original Glances features that Apple introduced in previous watchOS versions and later removed.

Enhanced fitness and health features

Apple has also improved the fitness and health features of its smartwatch. Cyclists in particular can look forward to new features: watchOS 10 now supports Bluetooth sensors on bikes and offers new workout features. In addition, workouts are now displayed large on the iPhone, which can serve as a speedometer. Another focus of watchOS 10 is mental health. Users can record and evaluate their emotional state. In addition, Apple offers questionnaires that can assess the risk of depression or anxiety.

New features to prevent myopia in children

With watchOS 10, Apple is also introducing features designed to prevent myopia in children. For example, the Health app can indicate whether children are spending enough time outdoors. In addition, the Screen Distance feature can measure the distance to the screen and indicate to children if they are holding the screen too close to their eyes.

Availability and Supported Models

There is no official release date for watchOS 10 yet, but it is expected to be released in the fall of 2023 along with the new Apple Watch. All models starting with the Apple Watch 4 are expected to receive the update. However, some of the new features might require special sensors or hardware that were only introduced in later models.
