Western Digital: WD Gold, WD Red Pro and WD Purple now also available with 22 TB

The capacities of hard drives from the manufacturer Western Digital continue to increase. Only in March 2022, the WD Red Pro with up to 20 terabytes capacity was launched and a little later the first hard drives of the Ultrastar series with 22 and 26 TB were shown. Now they announce that the WD Gold, WD Red Pro and WD Purple hard drive series are now also available with 22 TB.

Western Digital has the largest… hard drives

Following on the heels of its UltraStar series data center models, Western Digital hard drives have now reached a maximum capacity of 22 terabtye in the consumer and server segments. As the company announced today, the WD Gold, WD Red Pro and WD Purple series are now also available with 22 TB.

These sizes are made possible by technologies such as OptiNAND, ePMR (Energy-Assisted Perpendicular Magnetic Recording), Triple-Stage Actuator (TSA) and HelioSeal. The combination of it all allows the 22TB CMR hard drives a density of 2.2TB per slice.

In the WD Gold series for data and IT centers, this provides another advantage, as the new 22 TB WD Gold CMR HDDs offer more storage with the same carbon footprint and smaller footprint.

WD Red Pro HDDs for NAS systems are designed specifically for environments with many active users as well as intensive workloads in continuous operation. The HDDs easily handle demanding applications such as file synchronization and sharing, backup/archiving, multimedia directories and private cloud storage.

The WD Purple Pro HDDs, on the other hand, are aimed at those who need intelligent video and surveillance solutions. They are specifically designed for use in video analytics and AI as well as deep learning systems. They feature Western Digital’s AllFrame technology, which supports 32 AI streams for deep-learning analytics within the system and helps ensure fewer frames are lost.

Pricing and Availability

The new Western Digital 22TB capacity hard drives are expected to be available in stores immediately. However, they are not yet listed, with the exception of the WD Red Pro with 22 TB. This one is priced at a URP of $599.99 in the US.
