AENO DB1S & DB2S test: smarter tooth brushing

Dentists agree – if you want to ensure comprehensive and healthy oral hygiene, you should use an electric toothbrush when brushing your teeth. However, the test winners from Philips or Oral B are extremely expensive, costing over 100 euros. However, there are now exciting alternatives. In the AENO DB1S/AENO DB2S test, I replaced my Philips Sonicare with the two smart toothbrushes from AENO for over a week.

Scope of delivery

In addition to the smart toothbrush itself, there are three brush heads, a wireless charging station and a USB-A to USB-C charging cable on board. The inclusion of three heads is particularly commendable. This gives you a little buffer before you have to buy new brush heads.

AENO DB2S/AENO DB1S test: Design and workmanship

Visually, the AENO DB1S and DB2S are an asset to any bathroom. Both have a matt finish which, according to the manufacturer, offers effective protection against fading. How effective this coating actually is can only be tested in a long-term test.

In any case, there were no signs of use during my test phase. Protection in accordance with the IPX7 standard should prevent water damage. This is of course an advantage for an electric toothbrush. The decisive difference between the two models is the color.

While the AENO DB1S comes in white, the manufacturer has opted for a black housing for the DB2S. The charging cradle speaks the same design language and matches the color of the toothbrush. Both toothbrushes have the same shape, which scores points in practice with its great ergonomics. This means they fit perfectly in the hand.

All in all, the DB1S and DB2S offer outstanding build quality that is in no way inferior to models from Philips or Oral B. This applies not only to the housing, but also to the solid metal brush head holder and the charging/storage tray.

AENO DB2S/AENO DB1S test: Operation

The controls of the electric toothbrushes are self-explanatory. Everything important is located on the front. As soon as the brush head is attached and the battery is charged, you can use it straight away. It is switched on using the button on the front, which is quickly recognized by the thin metal frame. The first press of the thumb on the button activates the toothbrush.

You can navigate through the modes with further clicks. There are five modes to choose from: “Soft”, “Clean”, “Massage”, “White” and “Smart”. In ‘Soft’ mode, you get the gentlest tooth cleaning. ‘Clean’ offers a standard cleaning. In ‘Massage’, your gums are massaged to stimulate blood circulation. “White” maintains the whiteness of your teeth by polishing them and “Smart” works according to the scenario set in the app. As soon as a mode has been active for a few seconds, a click on the button switches the toothbrush off.

When you switch it on again, it restarts in the last selected mode. This is wonderfully intuitive and works perfectly in practice. The only thing I have to criticize are the LEDs on the DB2S, which indicate the current mode. These are difficult to see, especially in bright ambient light. However, I didn’t have this problem with the DB1S.

AENO DB2S/AENO DB1S test: App for smart features

It is possible to use both electric toothbrushes without an app connection. But that would be a real shame. After all, the smart features of the AENO app are the highlight of the DB1S and DB2S. Eight additional modes can be selected via the smartphone application. One mode allows you to make completely individual settings for pressure and frequency.

The mode you have selected via the app can be selected on the toothbrush via the “Smart” item. You can also use the app to monitor how thorough your cleaning is. During cleaning, the app not only alerts you to changes in the area of your teeth. After cleaning, you also receive a score for how thorough your brushing was. A maximum of 100 points is possible here. Your results are then tracked and can be traced afterwards.

You can also view the battery indicator in the app and estimate how long the toothbrush will last. This means that the app is by no means just a pointless gimmick, but proves to be a useful addition in practice. However, the manufacturer should work a little on the German translation. This leaves a lot to be desired in places.

AENO DB2S/AENO DB1S test: tooth cleaning

The AENO DB1S and DB2S have a lot of power to offer. The manufacturer claims an impressive 46,000 vibrations per minute. Despite this, it works pleasingly quietly. This is due to the proven sonic technology. The rapid up and down movements, in combination with the special brush heads, should ensure comprehensive cleaning.

Charging is via USB-C at the back

Finally, an oxygen-enriched foam is created, which should also be able to reach hard-to-reach areas in the mouth. This in turn should ensure better hygiene in interdental spaces, but also help to combat plaque. The plan works. In the test, I actually noticed that the foam development was quite comprehensive.

The factory setting stipulates that the toothbrush switches off automatically after two minutes of use. To ensure that you reach all areas of your mouth during this time, the toothbrush briefly interrupts every 30 seconds to remind you to move on to another area. You can not only deactivate automatic switch-off in the app.

You can also adjust the interval between notifications to change areas and reduce it to 15 seconds. For example, if you want to brush your teeth in between during the day, you can take a short “brushing break”. Incidentally, AENO promises its users that cleaning is 10 times more effective than with a conventional manual toothbrush.

I can only emphasize that the feeling of cleanliness after each brushing with the DB1S and DB2S was excellent. My Philips Sonicare only has a minimal advantage here. However, it also cost more than twice as much as the AENO DB1S and DB2S. For the price, the smart toothbrushes offer really great results.

AENO DB2S/AENO DB1S test: Toothbrush for the whole family

Manufacturer AENO also emphasizes the special choice of bristles when promoting the two toothbrushes. DuPont Tynex bristles are used, which are said to score points for flexibility and abrasion resistance. After a week of use, I have yet to see any signs of wear on the bristles. Furthermore, the brush heads also reach interdental spaces with their fine bristles.

What I particularly like about the brush heads are the small symbols printed on them. Three heads are supplied ex works, each with a different icon so that they can be distinguished. This means that one toothbrush can easily be used by three different people. There is no risk of confusion here. A DB1S or DB2S is therefore perfect for a family of three.

AENO DB2S/AENO DB1S test: Battery life

According to the manufacturer, the two electric toothbrushes with their 1,400 mAh battery should be able to run for 90 days. This means you can take them with you on vacation and leave the charger at home. Once the battery is empty, the charging station comes into play. This is connected to the included charging cable (USB-A to USB-C) via the USB-C port and supplied with power. A full charge takes around 5 hours.

Conclusion

The AENO DB1S and DB2S prove in the test that a good electric toothbrush does not have to carry the Oral B or Philips logo. This is not only due to the stylish design and high quality of workmanship. The toothbrushes also make a good impression when it comes to cleaning. However, the real highlight is the integration of the Aeno app. Here you can customize, monitor and track the cleaning process. Last but not least, the long battery life should be emphasized.

The only thing I can really complain about is the display on the front of the DB2S. The LEDs are simply difficult to see in bright surroundings. However, this may have been a Sunday product. After all, the DB1S does not have this problem. Furthermore, the localization of the app leaves a lot to be desired. A better translation would be desirable here. If that doesn’t bother you, you get a smart toothbrush with good cleaning performance at a fair price.

The AENO DB1S and DB2S are great electric toothbrushes that score points with smart features and good tooth cleaning.
