Eufy S100 Wall Light Cam Test

In addition to the Eufy S100 itself, you will find a wall bracket, mounting materials (screws and plugs), a micro USB cable and a quick-start guide in the packaging.

Eufy S100 Wall Light Cam test: design and workmanship

Anyone expecting a pure surveillance camera will probably be a little shocked by the Eufy S100 at first. This is due to the sheer size of the smart home gadget. At 110 x 134 x 405 mm, it is significantly larger than other security cameras. However, this is of course not due to the camera unit, which is located in the middle of the device.

The reason for the expansive dimensions are the two light units, which still seem quite exotic in the field of surveillance technology. Personally, the combination reminds me of the EZVIZ LC3(test). Visually, however, I like the Eufy model much better at first glance. This is because the Anker subsidiary places greater emphasis on symmetry here and the two light units appear to be mirrored.

The LEDs can also be rotated by 180 degrees for indirect lighting

To the uninitiated, the S100 may initially look like a large wall light. The camera unit is only visible on closer inspection. This should appeal to all those who are not fans of conspicuous surveillance cameras. The leaf-like shape of the LED lights also provides a modern look. You can rotate the two lamp units to suit your mood. This allows you to choose between direct and indirect lighting.

In the center is the camera unit with microphone and loudspeaker

This not only makes it suitable as a modern floodlight that you can use to illuminate your entire driveway. You can also use it conveniently as a cozy light for the seating area in the garden. The smart home gadget not only makes a positive impression in terms of design. The build quality is also of a high standard. It doesn’t crack or creak at any point.

Eufy S100 Wall Light Cam test: Installation

Smart home gadgets are primarily intended to make everyday life more convenient. This convenience begins with the installation of the devices. Before you rush out and buy an Eufy S100, you should first check the local conditions. The combination of camera and light does not have a battery and therefore requires an active power connection. On the one hand, you should therefore have a 230-volt connection on your façade.

The processing quality is at a high level

In addition, a stable Internet connection via WLAN is required. So make sure that there is a good WiFi signal at the installation location. If these two requirements are met, there is nothing to prevent successful installation. Particularly practical: The surveillance camera can be set up in advance. To do this, you need to supply it with power using the enclosed USB cable.

Once the S100 is supplied with power, the next step is to integrate it into your home network. With the help of the right app, this is really child’s play. The smartphone application takes you by the hand and guides you step by step through the commissioning process. Once the gadget has been set up, you can attach it to the façade. This is also easy to do. At least if you have already installed a lamp before.

If you don’t have the necessary experience, simply ask a knowledgeable friend or hire a professional. Eufy includes suitable installation material in the scope of delivery. The app is also a helpful companion when attaching it to the wall. The illustrated instructions show you what to do. The camera is up and running in a flash.

Eufy S100 Wall Light Cam test: Camera settings

Once the S100 has been successfully installed, the next step takes you to the Eufy app. The application is the interface between you and the camera. This means, for example, that you receive push notifications when the S100 has detected movement. The camera also offers practical person recognition.

Experience has shown that if there is a lot going on in your garden, your cell phone may vibrate constantly. To prevent this, the sensitivity of the motion detection can be adjusted. But of course these are not the only setting options. You can also set up blind zones. You should do this, for example, with the public road or visible neighboring properties.

This will protect the privacy of neighbors and third parties. As a final result, the selected areas are automatically blacked out by the camera. You can also make settings for the alarm. If there is movement within a selected area, the siren sounds at a loud 105 dB.

Eufy S100 Wall Light Cam test: Lighting settings

As this is a combination of camera and light, you can of course also make settings for the lighting. The light itself offers an impressive maximum brightness of 1,200 lumens. This allows large areas to be illuminated. If you prefer more comfort, you can of course reduce the brightness in the app. The white tone can also be adjusted.

Various gradations are possible here, from cool white to warm white. But that’s not all. The S100 can also light up in color. Here you can let off steam in the app. In addition to the light color, you can also choose from different lighting effects. You can also choose how and when the light should be activated. On the one hand, the surveillance camera can be used like a motion detector.

The light only comes on when motion is detected. You can then set the light duration after motion is detected. The interaction with person detection is really cool here. If desired, the light can only be switched on when a person’s movement has been detected. Alternatively, the LEDs can also be used as a conventional lamp.

Eufy S100 Wall Light Cam test: Video storage either locally or in the cloud

Of course, the question of how and where you can save the recordings is particularly important. In contrast to competitors such as Ring, Eufy gives you the choice between local storage or storage in the cloud. The camera comes with 4 GB of memory ex works. This should certainly be enough for many users. Alternatively, you can use the Eufy cloud for a fee.

Here you have to expect to pay at least 3 US dollars per month. However, this is only the basic tariff, which only covers one camera. The 10 US dollar Plus tariff, on the other hand, already covers ten different devices from the manufacturer. So if you already have gadgets from Eufy anyway or are planning a corresponding ecosystem in your household, this tariff may be the right solution.

Eufy S100 Wall Light Cam test: Camera quality

The images from the S100 are certainly impressive. The camera offers a maximum resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels. The result is not only pleasingly sharp, but also scores with good color reproduction. Thanks to the powerful LED lighting, you even get a colorful shot at night.

It records day and night at 15 frames per second. If you want to save storage space, you can also reduce the quality via the app. You can choose between 1,600 x 1,200 pixels and 800 x 600 pixels. The field of view of the lens is at least as important as the resolution. Here, the S100 can definitely score points with a total of 160 degrees.

Eufy S100 Wall Light Cam test: Compatible with Google Assistant and Alexa

If you are an active user of a voice assistant from the Google or Amazon cosmos, the S100 is a good addition to your existing smart home environment. After all, the camera can be conveniently operated using voice control and, for example, the live image can be displayed on a smart screen. Unfortunately, things look different outside of Google and Amazon. Other assistants are simply not supported. If this is important to you, it’s important to keep this in mind. We don’t yet know whether Eufy will be upgrading services such as Apple Homekit.

Conclusion

With a current price of just under 170 euros, the Eufy S100 Wall Light Cam is perhaps not a bargain at first glance. However, once you take a look at the features and technology, you quickly realize that the price is more than justified. It starts with the stylish design and the excellent build quality. But the technology is also impressive. On the one hand, you get really good picture quality. You can use the Eufy app to customize the way the surveillance camera works to suit your personal preferences. However, my personal highlight is the lighting.

Unlike the LC3 from EZVIZ, this is not just intended to provide simple light. With the option of setting colors and even selecting lighting effects, you can create really beautiful outdoor lighting here. I think the idea of the rotating LED lamps is excellent. Before you buy separate surveillance cameras and smart outdoor lights, you should definitely take a look at the Eufy S100. This combination gadget combines the two product categories in the best possible way. Only the limited compatibility with other smart home ecosystems tarnishes the otherwise positive overall picture a little.
