After the FeiyuTech SPG2 Smartphone gimbal (82% grade “very good”) and the FeiyuTech G6 Action-Cam-Gimbal (82% grade “very good”) we now have the third gimbal of the Chinese company in the test. It concerns thereby the compact FeiyuTech WG2X Gimbal, which is conceived likewise for Action Cams and is offered at present for no longer available.
Scope of Delivery, Material and Workmanship
FeiyuTech delivers the WG2X Gimbal in the familiar packaging design. A stable polystyrene cover contains all components and can also be used for later storage and safe transport. The scope of delivery includes:
- WG2X Gimbal
- Two camera brackets including fixing screws and spare screws
- Micro-USB cable for charging
Unfortunately, our test specimen did not include a holding rod and a tripod, without which the gimbal would not be suitable for longer filming from the hand. Due to its compact shape, however, the FeiyuTech WG2X is more suitable for athletes who mount the gimbal on their helmets while cycling, for example.
The material selection remains at a high level typical of FeiyuTech. The foot, arm and camera mount as well as the brackets and screws are made of aluminium. In order to avoid scratches on the display of the mounted camera, the mount also has a rubber padding.
As with the other gimbals tested by the Chinese company, the processing is also excellent. Our FeiyuTech WG2X did not have any defects, unclean gaps or sharp metal edges. Thanks to the high-quality workmanship of the high-quality materials, it is to be expected that the splash-proof gimbal will not have any problems even during tough outdoor use. Stronger rain showers and sand on the beach could not harm the WG2X during the test runs. Only salt water cannot be tolerated by the case and the electronics of the gimbal.
|Weight||238 gram without camera|
|Battery life||2,5 hours|
Battery and Software
The battery life of the Gimbal is only 2.5 hours with active WLAN. Charging takes about 2 hours. Unfortunately, the 1,500 mAh integrated lithium-ion battery cannot be replaced.
Basically, the gimbal can also be used to stabilize videos without an additional smartphone. Some functions can only be used if the gimbal is connected to a smartphone via Feiyu ON App, which is available for Android and iOS. During our tests there were unfortunately regular disconnections, which could be observed with both an iPhone Xs and a Samsung Galaxy S8. The experiences thus coincide with the ratings of numerous other users who complain about the bad app in the App Stores.
Test Recording with GoPro Hero 7 Black
The test shots are taken with the FeiyuTech WG2X Gimbal in combination with a GoPro Hero 7 Black. Some of the shots were filmed by hand, others were taken with a suction cup and parts created by the 3D printer.
A smartphone to control the gimbal was not used during the test recordings. Just like the FeiyuTech G6, the FeiyuTech WG2X can also convince here. Even at relatively high speeds, fast movements as well as bumps and not quite flat roads, the stabilization means that there are hardly any vibrations and jolts to be seen in the video.
Other Compatible Action Cameras
Thanks to the two included mounting brackets, the FeiyuTech WG2X is compatible with almost all action cams. During the test a GoPro Hero 7 Black was used, but according to FeiyuTech the following cameras can also be mounted:
- GoPro Hero 7
- GoPro Hero 6
- GoPro Hero 5
- GoPro Hero 4
- GoPro Hero 3+
- GoPro Hero 3
- Yi 4K
According to the instructions, other cameras with a maximum weight of 130 grams can also be used if they fit into the mounting brackets. To use the HERO session you need an additional mounting plate, for the Sony RX0 you also need an additional adapter.
Overall the FeiyuTech WG2X could convince despite the unfortunately still existing software problems. Since the gimbal is also easy to use without a connected smartphone and the most important function, namely image stabilization, also works under bad conditions, it is definitely a recommendation. An update of the software that prevents the disruptive connection interruptions in the future could improve the rating from “very good” to “excellent”.
If you are interested in the FeiyuTech WG2X, please pay attention to the included accessories. With our Test version for no longer available only the gimbal and the necessary mounting material as well as the transport box were included. For others offers for the same price there is also a handrail for filming and a small tripod included.
Users who can do without the compact form are better advised to use the FeiyuTech G6, whose stabilisation is also excellent, as the gimbal is the better alternative for most people due to its grab handle and longer battery life for filming.
