Samsung C49HG90 Review: 49-inch Monitor in 32:9 Format

The strongly curved C49HG90 from Samsung is a screen that will remain in your memory. With a width of 1.20 metres, it is extremely large. But not only this measurement is striking – the comparatively low height of only 53 centimeters also ensures that the impression of the Samsung screen burns itself into the memory. But can the device do more than just look impressive? We wanted to know and tested the screen. The results can be found in the following lines.

Design and workmanship

Reference should first be made to the introductory words: The screen is impressive. Its size and the unusual dimensions, even in relation to each other, distinguish it clearly from other monitors on the market. The widescreen format of 32:9 corresponds to two 27-inch monitors placed side by side. So the sight is unusual at first.

With regard to the design, however, the South Korean manufacturer can certainly be complimented. Samsung knows how to stage the unusual dimensions well. In spite of the enormous width, the monitor appears quite reserved. The design thus stands in strong contrast to the dimensions of the device, which leads to an overall very positive first impression.

As expected, the workmanship of the device is impeccable. Samsung uses high-quality materials and processes them very well. The screen has a high-quality appearance and is surprisingly easy to set up despite its high weight. After the screws have been turned into the monitor arm, the huge screen stands securely. The stand can then be adjusted as required. The cable routing integrated in the stand and the headset holder also integrated in this stand also stand out positively.

All in all, the first impression is positive. Samsung has created an elegantly designed, eye-catching and at the same time simple and very well manufactured device, which stands out from other monitors due to its extraordinary dimensions.

Display and picture quality

First of all, it should be said that the giant monitor is explicitly a gaming screen, although the dimensions do not indicate it at first. However, according to Samsung, the 1800R curvature of the screen, which is quite strong, should make it an ideal device for gaming. Further advantages resulting from the design of the display are mainly the much larger viewing angles. Opponents can be noticed much earlier in games than on smaller displays. In dicey situations, the width of the screen can therefore be the decisive factor in deciding whether to win or lose.

The color fidelity of the screen is still noticeable in the test. Colours are very differentiated and reproduced true to detail. The contrast is at a very high level with 3000:1, which is positively noticeable in our test. All in all, HDR support makes the presentation of content extremely realistic. In addition to the factors mentioned, the curvature, which gives the impression of being in the middle of the action, also ensures this. Unfortunately, the relatively low resolution of 3,840 x 1,080 pixels for the size of the monitor is noticeable here. Although content is presented in a very differentiated and lively way, it is not extremely sharp. Especially if one is used to higher resolution monitors, the change is noticeable. However, one must also consider that current graphics cards with a higher resolution would have problems.

A frame rate of 144 Hz and AMD’s FreeSync technology also ensure that image delays and annoying streaks are effectively avoided. All in all, there are only points of criticism regarding the resolution with regard to the image quality. Samsung’s exceptional screen can otherwise offer an exceptional picture quality and convince in this so important area.

Connections and extras

Plenty of connection options are available. Two HDMI sockets, two DisplayPort ports and two USB 3.0 ports should be more than sufficient for the average user. There’s also a headphone jack. It is also possible to connect two image sources to the screen at the same time. In this case, the content is displayed in two separate windows on the screen, which is ultimately a useful additional feature offered by only a few products.

The monitor can be adjusted both in height and tilt to adapt to individual needs.

Condclusion of the Samsung C49HG90 Review

Overall, the C49HG90 from Samsung is a very good monitor. With extraordinary dimensions – a width of 1.20 metres and a height of only 53 centimetres – and outstanding image quality, the device scores well. In addition, the workmanship and design of the device are also convincing. Only the resolution is a little too low for us for everyday use apart from gambling. But the format also needs getting used to. So the model is a real gaming monitor.

An extremely wide monitor with strong curvature and excellent image quality - unfortunately with too low resolution for office use.
