Teamgroup PD1000 – External SSD in chic aluminum garb

With the PD1000, Teamgroup has launched an external SSD on the market, which is not only supposed to stand out with its inner values, but also with its case. The SSD is available with 512 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB and is supposed to allow data rates of 900 MB/s in writing and 1,000 MB/s in reading, whereby the installed electronics are protected by a case with IP68 certification.

How the PD1000 performs in the practical test, and whether it is worthwhile for its price of € 9.99 (€ 9.99 / l)* [test time: 100 € for 512 GB], we will clarify in the following test.

Technical data

Scope of delivery & Workmanship

When it comes to the scope of delivery, Teamgroup limits itself to the usual: Two USB connection cables with a length of 0.3 m are included with the SSD. One of the cables is used for connecting to a USB-B port, the other cable is suitable for USB-C. Both cables are made of a sealed material. Both are encased in a tight, high-quality sleeve.

The PD1000’s case, which can be described as “conspicuously inconspicuous”, is just as high-end. The laterally rounded metal cuboid made of aluminum looks, in our subjective opinion, excellent and is also correspondingly manufactured: There are neither visual conspicuities on the metal nor on the transitions, the SSD fits well in the hand and is very torsion-resistant. There is nothing to criticize here.

Performance

To test the Teamgroup PD1000, we used two different systems: one based on a Gigabyte X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming and one based on an Asrock B450 Pro4. In both cases, the respective 10 Gbps port was used, but we still noticed significant performance differences. Despite multiple driver reinstallations in the X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming, the SSD did not want to leave the 700 MB/s range. However, this does not seem to be due to the SSD itself, as the data rates on the B450 Pro4 were much higher. For this reason, the results on this motherboard are taken as the final performance values.

Teamgroup promises read rates of up to 1000 MB/s and write rates of up to 900 MB/s for the PD1000, for which a USB port with 10 Gbps is absolutely necessary. On the Asrock B450 Pro4, the SSD reached a maximum of around 960 MB/s in our test and can thus keep its promise.

The said 960 MB/s were attested to the PD1000 by CrystalDiskMark in the sequential read of 128 KB blocks. The write performance is also high in this mode: The SSD achieves 903 MB/s here. The values are just as good for 1 MB blocks with 877 to 816 MB/s.

SSD AS SSD (schreiben) HD Tune Pro

AS SSD comes to comparable values: Here, the PD1000 achieves 918 and 876 MB/s in sequential access, respectively. Both tools also show comparable results in 4K blocks: With a single thread, the data rates of 35 to 38 MB/s in AS SSD and 33 to 63 MB/s in CrystalDiskMark are within the expected range. The access management also achieves a reasonable to good performance with several accessing threads: Around 200 MB/s in both benchmarks.

The PD1000 also scores well with regard to the other tools. The access times are very low and the scores in the Atto Disk benchmark, HD Tune and the AS SSD Copy benchmark also fit. The bottom line is that the PD1000 is very fast.

The temperatures measured by CrystalDiskInfo do not give reason for concern. The SSD’s temperature was around 30°C in idle mode at room temperature. During copying of around 25 GB of mixed files, 55°C were measured on the board at peak, whereby the case hardly warmed up noticeably. Thus, the PD1000 is well suited for the usual use for transporting large files.

Conclusion

With the PD1000, Teamgroup has brought an SSD onto the market that is supposed to score with a particularly high-quality case and a high speed. We can confirm both.

Visually, the PD1000 left us with a subjectively positive impression, which is underpinned by the excellent build quality of the case and the included connection cables with well implemented cable sheathing.

In terms of performance, the SSD can keep the promised performance rates: Ideally, it reads at around 960 MB/s and writes at 903 MB/s. However, as soon as random sectors are accessed, the model is slower, just like other SSDs. The bottom line is that the PD1000 is still very fast, especially for an external SSD.

As is often the case, the current price will determine whether the PD1000 is a good choice at the moment. In terms of price, the latter model is thus better positioned.
