The home screen of Sony’s home console also lives up to its name after a well-deserved break and makes some gamers feel at home. But just as you want to customize your own four walls to suit your taste, you also want the background image and design to match your own ideas. But how can the PS5 background be changed? Many Sony fans also ask whether the PS5 design can be changed. We will clarify that in the following.

Change PS5 background: Not possible so far, unfortunately

We have to start the explanations with a disclaimer: With the Playstation 5, it is unfortunately not possible to change the background until now. Sony hasn’t really been able to explain why this is the case in a plausible way until now. Some might think that this is due to the extremely short loading times. This in turn has to do with the fast SSD that is used in the PS5. Sony probably thought that gamers would spend less time on the home screen than in the previous console generations.

Furthermore, Sony takes a different approach in presenting the PS5’s home screen than it did with the PS4. It is much more dynamic here. If you select a game in the overview, the look of the background adapts to it. This does not only apply to color and design. The music also adapts to the game in this case. This adds variety when scrolling through the main menu, which means many won’t mind not being able to change the PS5 design in the home screen.

PS5 design change: Hardware customization as an alternative

To be able to change the PS5 background, would probably wish many users of the console. However, if you really want to add a custom touch to your home console from Sony, you can easily make adjustments to the hardware. This way, you can change the PS5 design and, on top of that, benefit from the fact that the changes can be seen even when the console is turned off.

Customize outer shells

Opinions are undoubtedly divided on the design of the PlayStation 5. Even if you don’t like it, however, you have to admit to this one that it is unique. The combination of the black centerpiece and the two white outer panels is a real eye-catcher. However, uniqueness cancels itself out when many people have a model in their own four walls. The PS5 was sold almost 40 million times worldwide until summer 2023. So, no PS5 owner can really call his console unique. If you want to create a console with personal charm, it is possible to change the outer casing, among other things. These are now available in different colors, which means you can also use a black PS5, for example, if you want. On Amazon you can find many different versions of the so-called faceplates.

Before you install the new faceplates, you’ll need to get rid of the old ones, of course. Even though the factory-installed outer covers seem to float due to the PS5’s curved shapes, they hold tightly to the console’s body. However, you can uninstall the white panels without any problems with a few skillful moves. It is important that you turn off the PlayStation. If you want to be on the safe side, unplug the power cord. If your PS5 is not in use, put it on its side for the time being. Also, remove the stand. It is important that the PlayStation logo faces upwards. Now pull the faceplate above the PS logo upwards and push it to the left at the same time. Then turn the console to the other side. Here you have to pull and push on the opposite corner. Once you have removed it, the PS5 is in front of you in a naked state. The PS5 design can now be changed with the help of other faceplates. Of course, common models rely on the same holding mechanism. To attach them, you simply have to use the opposite procedure. Simply place them on the naked console and slide them into the designated holder. Now you have given your PlayStation 5 a very individual design. If this step is too expensive or time-consuming for you, you can also simply use stickers for the white plates. However, you shouldn’t save too much here. After all, cheap stickers like to leave ugly adhesive residue.

Customizing the lighting

Want to give your PS5 its own personal style but leave the faceplates alone? With the chic combination of white and black, Sony should certainly have met the taste of many of its fans. If you still want to change the PS5 design, you can also adjust the lighting. The PlayStation 5 comes with blue LED lighting from the factory. But did you know that you can change it? Unfortunately, this is not possible in the console settings. Instead, you have to buy an additional gadget here as well. More specifically, special LED strips optimized for the PS5 are used here. These are transparent in themselves, but allow for color matching. To install the new lighting, you have to remove the two faceplates again. Now you simply stick the new strips onto the normal lighting.
