ASUS ROG Ally X: Successor to the gaming handheld officially confirmed

The popular gaming handheld ASUS ROG Ally (our review) is getting a successor. This will be officially unveiled at Computex 2024 on June 2. It will be called the ASUS ROG Ally X, as the manufacturer has now revealed in a video and some details to the website TheVerge.

ASUS ROG Ally X comes with improvements

ASUS is giving the ROG Ally PC gaming handheld an upgrade, which will be officially unveiled at Computex 2024 on June 2. The new edition bears the name ASUS ROG Ally X and will receive a significant upgrade in some areas.

The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chipset under the hood and the 7-inch 120 Hz display including VRR support will remain. However, the handheld will apparently also be available in a black color, while the battery is significantly larger and should therefore provide more impressive runtimes.

According to ASUS, the battery should be “much more than 40 percent” larger than that of its predecessor. The battery life in demanding games is to be doubled from 1.5 hours to 3 hours. Shawn Yen, SVP of Asus, admits in an interview with TheVerge that the housing certainly offers space for a larger battery, so the Ally X should have the same dimensions as its predecessor.

ASUS is saving the concrete specifications for the official announcement, but there are many improvements in the areas that fans have been asking for. Specifically in the areas of battery, memory, graphics and storage as well as the connections.

There is talk of more than 16 GB of RAM and a larger M.2 2280 slot for easier and more cost-effective memory expansions. The ASUS ROG Ally X should also be easier to repair and be able to replace the analog sticks, for example.

Slightly higher weight

In terms of design, the ASUS ROG Ally X should be slightly heavier than the first generation, particularly due to the larger battery. The manufacturer also promises improved grips and slight improvements to the D-pad, analog sticks and triggers.

The layout of the mainboard will also be adapted and the SD card reader will be moved to a new position to possibly improve cooling. The aim is to get a grip on the problems that the first ROG Ally suffered from.

There will also be a new Armoury Crate 1.5 software with a fresh interface that offers simpler and better navigation. It will also be possible to share button layouts with other players. Windows 11 will apparently continue to serve as the basis for the gaming handheld.

Higher price for the ASUS ROG Ally X

Unlike the Steam Deck OLED (our review), which largely replaced the LCD model, the ASUS ROG Ally X will be offered alongside the ROG Ally, which will function as an entry-level model in future. However, due to the large number of improvements, the new edition should lead to a slightly higher price. Here too, we will have to wait until June 2nd for the concrete details until ASUS officially presents the ROG Ally X.
