Canon introduces new webcam software

Webcams were probably not as popular as in the current situation. Canon has now responded to the increasing demand for high-quality video solutions and released a new webcam software that allows simple Canon cameras to be converted into webcams in no time at all.

Canon reacts to pandemic demand

With the release of the software Canon reacts to the strong increase in demand for high-performance webcams due to the pandemic. Due to massive contact restrictions, meetings in many companies still take place in purely digital form. If at least basic direct personal contact is to be maintained, a webcam is indispensable. With the upgrade option for cameras that have already been on the market for some time, Canon now offers a simple and, above all, free way to get ready to participate in video conferences.

In the spring, Canon had already released the beta version of the software, which can be used to convert simple Canon cameras into webcams. The final version now available can be obtained free of charge from the manufacturer’s website. In order to use the software, a compatible camera and a PC or Mac must be available with which the camera can be operated. The webcam is operated via a USB connection.

High image quality guaranteed ?

In addition, Canon wants to score with a very high image quality. The compatible cameras are comparatively high-quality models that are normally used for semi-professional photography and videography. Features that are not available in standard webcams are included. For example, thanks to a special sensor technology, they are able to provide acceptable images even in low light conditions. In addition, functions for color reproduction and targeted depth-of-field control also contribute to high image quality.

For ideal results, Canon recommends the use of a mini tripod, a fully charged battery, positioning the camera at display height and a neutral, quiet background with no backlighting.

The Canon EOS Webcam Utility Software can be downloaded here free of charge. Currently the software is only available for Windows, a Mac version will follow.
