After six years, DreamHack Leipzig, organized by Messe Leipzig together with Schenker Technologies/XMG, is coming to an end. The licensor, the Swedish DreamHack AB, will not renew the license agreement with the Leipzig trade fair, which means the end for “Germany’s biggest LAN party”.
23,000 visitors last year
In 2020, DreamHack Leipzig was able to be held before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in January. According to the organizers, around 23,000 visitors and just under 2,000 gamers answered the call to the Leipzig fairgrounds, which older gamers still know from the days of the Games Convention, which subsequently moved to Cologne.
Until DreamHack Leipzig 2020, the trade fair with its program of Esports tournaments, trade fair area (“DreamExpo”), Indie Arena and stage program recorded steadily growing visitor numbers, but in 2021 the trade fair already had to be cancelled.
In a statement on their own homepage, the organizers thanked the community and the exhibitors as well as partners and promised that they “will do everything in their power to bring gaming back to our halls”. However, there do not seem to be any concrete plans yet. It is also unclear whether the DreamHack format will possibly be continued at another location within Germany.
