Gigaset GS290: New Mid-range Smartphone from Germany Introduced

Christmas is just around the corner and manufacturers are reacting. Just in time for Merry Christmas, Gigaset launches the Gigaset GS290, its latest smartphone. Even if the German mobile phone manufacturer wants to establish the Gigaset GS290 as a new flagship, the smartphone is more likely to be in the lower middle class.

Thursday was the day. With the GS290, Gigaset introduced a new competitor to the already highly competitive smartphone market. According to the German manufacturer, the Gigaset GS290 is a solid all-rounder that can cope with everyday challenges. A glance at the Specs makes it clear that the Gigaset GS290 will rank in the lower mid-range of smartphones.

Inside the GS290 is the 8-core Helio P23 processor. This has a maximum clock rate of 2 GHz. It is supported by 4 GB RAM memory. However, the Gigaset GS290 does not offer much memory space. Just 64 GB is available to the user ex works. However, the comparatively small storage space can be conveniently expanded by up to 256 GB via MicroSD.

The Gigaset GS290 is by no means a small smartphone. The 1080p display measures 6.3 inches in the diagonal. Gigaset also doesn’t get past the modern Notch. In the GS290, the manufacturer relies on the recess introduced by OnePlus in the form of a drop. Gigaset wants to support its customers in protecting the GS290 display. A practical protective cover will be included in the scope of delivery.

What used to be reserved for the upper class can now also be found in the lower middle class. The 190 g Gigaset GS290 is equipped with an NFC chip that makes modern payment via Google Pay possible, for example. In addition, the Gigaset GS290 will offer the latest standard with Bluetooth 5.0.

The cameras are also impressive – at least on paper. The Gigaset GS290 has a built-in front camera that resolves at 16 MP and enables face recognition. If you don’t want to rely on face recognition, you can use the fingerprint sensor installed on the back to unlock it. There is also a dual camera on the back. The main camera has a maximum resolution of 16 MP and has an f/2.0 aperture. The lens of the second camera offers a resolution of up to 2 MP.

Choosing the Gigaset GS290 doesn’t give you a flagship, but at least Android support is guaranteed. The GS290 comes with Android Pie (version 9). An update to Android 10 has already been announced for next year. The Gigaset GS290 will be available next week in black and white at a price of 269 Euro. We can be curious whether the German manufacturer can keep up with tough competitors of the middle class like Xiaomi.
