GMC Hummer SUV: Smaller E-SUV shows itself

The legendary Hummer comes with an electric motor. Following the manufacturer’s electric pickup, the GMC Hummer SUV now showed off the distinctive E-SUV, thanks to which the exorbitantly high fuel consumption of its combustion sibling of well over 20 liters per 100 km should soon be a thing of the past.

GMC Hummer is letting the E-Pick-up be followed by the E-SUV of the legendary off-roader, at least in the USA. The E-SUV is still to be launched as early as the beginning of 2023. With a length of 4.99 meters, it is around half a meter more compact than its big brother with the open load floor. The wheelbase also shrinks from 3.45 to 3.22 meters.

With 608 kW or 830 hp, the GMC Hummer E-SUV still has plenty of steam under the hood. From a standstill, three electric motors are said to accelerate the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in less than four seconds, which is quite an announcement for such a massive and heavy vehicle.

“GMC’s Hummer EV SUV offers an exceptional balance of on-road performance and off-road capability, enhanced by a unique structure that enables our signature open-air experience,” reveals Al Oppenheiser, chief development officer at GMC.

Special attention is paid to the all-wheel steering system, which can direct power to individual wheels in rough terrain. This should also ensure a particularly tight turning circle of less than 11 meters. Even gradients of 60 percent should not pose any serious problems for the electric Hummer.

An adaptive air suspension and 22-inch wheels with 35-inch off-road tires with an extra large tread are said to distinguish the SUV.Underbody protection and underbody cameras with integrated washer are still available as an optional off-road package.

500 km range

The battery of the GMC Hummer SUV is largely the same as that of its own pickup. Despite a weight of around 4 tons and brute engine power, the E-SUV is said to allow a range of around 500 kilometers.

In addition, the E-Hummer is also supposed to be able to be used as a power source and, for example, supply its own four walls with energy, at least temporarily, in the event of a power outage.

Excitingly, the roof elements are supposed to be removable in just a few steps to quickly turn the E-SUV into a convertible. Otherwise, there is an electrically opening tailgate on which a spare wheel is mounted.

“Developing the pickup and SUV at the same time helped us give each vehicle its own unique characteristics to maximize utility,” said chief designer Phil Zak

In the U.S., the GMC Hummer SUV is scheduled to launch in early 2023. Whether the E-SUV will also make it to Europe is currently not yet clear.
