Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 gets Tiger Lake-H45

The new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 is aimed at business users in particular. In contrast to the ThinkPad P1 Gen 4, the configuration is a bit different, even though there are no differences on the outside.

Top equipment with Core i9-11950H and RTX 3080 laptop

The Xeon processors have been dispensed with in the ThinkPad X1 Extreme, but Tiger Lake H45 processors in the eleventh generation vPro variants are used here instead. In the best configuration of the X1 Extreme, the ThinkPad comes with a Core i9-11950H, which has 8 cores and 16 threads. Apart from that, there is also a Core i5-11500H or a Core i7-11850H. Each model has Intel’s UHD Graphics with 32 EUs. Since the Xeon processors have been dispensed with, non-ECC RAM is now installed in the X1 Extreme models. A maximum of 64 GB is distributed over two banks. Two M.2 slots are available for this, and up to 4 TB is offered via SSD.

Nvidia’s workstation model RTX A5000 has been removed as an option for the graphics card, but the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 laptop GPU is now available as the best variant. Smaller variants up to the GeForce RTX 3050 Ti laptop GPU are also available. The data on Dynamic Boost and TGP has not been announced yet.

Larger display and better battery

The biggest difference to the ThinkPad P1 is probably in the display, this has been brought up to 16 inches, instead of 15.6 inches, with narrower wheels and now offers a 16:10 format. There is a total of three IPS panels to choose from. One has 2,560 x 1,600 pixels and two with 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. The UHD+ screens cover 100 percent of the Adobe RGB color space, reach a maximum brightness of up to 600 cd/m² and also support Dolby Vision. The difference in the two 3,840 x 2,160 pixel variants is the touch function. All three IPS panels work with up to 60 Hz.

Despite numerous ports, such as two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A, two Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.1, audio combo, SD card (UHS-II), and there is also an optional nano-SIM slot, the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 has room for a 90-Wh battery. According to Lenovo’s measurements, it should achieve a runtime of ten hours. A new webcam, stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, and the power button with an integrated fingerprint sensor have also been installed. The webcam has a Full HD resolution.

Lenovo optionally offers 5G in the sub-6 GHz spectrum, and the WWAN module also supports the older mobile standards. Overall, the X1 Extreme measures 359.5 × 253.8 × 19.9 mm, which is just a bit bigger than the P1. Depending on the equipment, the ThinkPad comes to a weight starting at 1.814 kg.

Availability and prices

The new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme 4 goes on sale in matte black in August starting at 2,149 euros. Apart from the inconspicuous black, there is also a top cover with a carbon texture.
