Motorola Razr – Foldable Smartphone with Flexible Display Introduced

Although the last Motorola Razr phones were introduced about fifteen years ago, the new Razr folding smartphone with flexible display still strongly reminds of its predecessors. The horizontal folding phone has a foldable screen on the inside, which is 6.2 inches when folded out. The resolution is 2,142 x 878 pixels (373 ppi). When folded up, the 2.7-inch touchscreen displays calls and messages on the outside. The resolution is 600 x 800 pixels (370 ppi). Basic functions such as the Google Assistant, the camera and music can also be controlled via the external display.

The housing of the new Motorola Razr is made of stainless steel. The external mini display is protected by Gorilla. The display inside the smartphone lies on top of each other when folded. According to Motorola, this protects the sensitive display from dust and scratches. A nano-coating also ensures that the housing of the foldable smartphone is protected from splash water.

Like its fifteen-year-old predecessor, the folding mechanism not only protects the display, but also controls some of the smartphone’s functions. Calls can be ended, for example, by folding the device. However, the Motorola Razr, which was possible with one hand fifteen years ago and gave the phone a certain “coolness”, can no longer be opened with a swing due to the new hinge.

The built-in components come from the upper middle class, but cannot keep up with the foldable smartphones of the competition such as the Huawei Mate X and the Samsung Galaxy Fold, which of course follow a different concept and are even more expensive. The processor is a Snapdragon 710, the main memory offers 6 GB capacity and the internal memory is 128 GB. The battery capacity is also relatively low at 2,510 mAh. The Motorola Razr is unlocked with the help of a fingerprint sensor integrated into the bead of the smartphone.

Even the main camera cannot keep up with current high-end devices. It offers 16 megapixel resolution (aperture f/1.7) and a dual LED flash but no optical image stabilizer. The Selfie camera uses the display as a flash and offers a resolution of 5 megapixels (aperture f/2.0).

In addition to WLAN 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, LTE, UMTS and GSM, the Motorola Razr has Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC, so it can be used for Google Pay, for example. A classic SIM card, on the other hand, no longer exists. Instead, Motorola uses only an eSIM, which is not yet offered by all mobile phone providers in Germany.

In some countries, the smartphone is expected to appear in December before Christmas. Unfortunately, the device, which costs 1,500 dollars in the USA, will appear with Android 9, which is already outdated. In Germany, the device will not be available in stores until the first quarter of 2020.
