Nvidia became a victim of a cyberattack

When we reported about Nvidia in the past months, it was mainly about the semiconductor shortage. After all, it caused limited access to the products of the popular graphics card manufacturer for many weeks. Since this problem is apparently not enough, the US company has now fallen victim to a cyber attack. The damage is still uncertain.

Email system paralyzed

Apparently, Nvidia was attacked with a so-called ransomware. This targeted the company’s extensive IT infrastructure. As a result, both the email service and important developer tools were down for two days. An industry insider told the Telegraph news service. When asked by many media outlets, Nvidia confirmed the incident but would not elaborate. The company’s only comments, through spokesman Hector Marinez, were as follows:

“We are investigating an incident. Our business and commercial activities continue without interruption. We are still working to assess the nature and extent of the incident and have no further information to share at this time”

Possible damage still uncertain

Apart from the two-day outage of developer tools and email system, nothing is known about further damage – not yet at least. For example, we do not yet know whether the attackers may have been able to steal valuable company data. On the other hand, we do not assume that customer data was stolen. Otherwise, Nvidia would certainly have already made a statement about it. It is also possible that the company is not yet aware of the consequences of the cyberattack. According to a report by the news portal Bloomberg, it is said to have been a small attack with a “ransomware”.

Russia attack rather unlikely

It has not yet been possible to successfully identify the attackers. This is reported by the Telegraph. Currently, many cyberattacks are attributed to the still ongoing Ukraine war. Since Nvidia is considered a major company of the West, it would certainly be an attractive target for Russia. The signature of typical Russian cyberattacks can also be clearly seen here. After all, the local hackers not infrequently act with far worse malware disguised as ransomware. However, this conclusion would already be very far-fetched. After all, nothing points to an attack from Russia.
