Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro: Google’s smartphone gets new processor

The long-awaited unveiling of the latest version of the Google Pixel has finally taken place. And the Android inventor has a lot planned here. In addition to exciting technical details like a fancy display with 120 Hz as well as a once again better camera technology and AI, a brand-new processor called “Tensor” is supposed to slumber under the hood of the flagship.

Blog entry drops the bombshell

Comparing the approach of the presentation with that of Apple, Huawei or other smartphone manufacturers, Google turns out to be surprisingly quiet. Only a surprising blog entry pointed out to the community that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will launch later this year. In view of the heavily redesigned design that the published render images revealed, the search engine giant immediately caught the attention of many fans and tech enthusiasts worldwide. Certainly, the leak images that had already been floating around for the past few weeks were a cause for the sudden unannounced blog entry. Indeed, as it now turns out, the already leaked images were true to reality.

A flagship through and through

A look at the specs known so far really makes us want more. This already starts with the camera. The Pixel series has always been able to score in this discipline due to the sophisticated camera AI. Now, the aluminum-based smartphone relies on a so-called “camera bar”. A camera in the Pixel series has never been as big as in the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. However, this design is not only new within Google’s in-house smartphone series. The US electronics company also differs decisively from the other smartphone manufacturers with the vertical arrangement.

Most exciting, however, might be the new processor technology that the latest Pixel models are said to rely on. Namely, similar to Apple, Google has also moved to develop its own SoC solutions. The so-called “Tensor” is supposed to make its debut in the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. According to Google, the CPU technology is primarily characterized by an advanced AI performance. This should enable lots of exciting features and should, for example, again realize beautiful snapshots in the camera.

Details about the SoC technology are still missing

Google is, of course, still keeping a bit quiet about its revolutionary SoC. However, the company is not holding back on emphasizing exciting new features that will be enabled by the processor technology. The magic word here is “machine learning” – a technology that Google says the chip is specialized in. Especially the camera performance and speech recognition are supposed to be improved once again.

Photo by photo and voice search by voice search, the chip is also supposed to learn and become even better thanks to machine learning. Of course, data security is also becoming increasingly important in our digitized society. To meet customer demands in this regard, Google is relying on the Titan M2. This chip is supposed to do nothing less than make the Pixel 6 (Pro) the smartphone with the world’s highest data security.

More details in the fall

It already seems a bit like Google would have liked to wait a bit longer with first info on its two new Pixels. However, the leaks seem to have forced the company to adopt a corresponding attack posture. However, since Google has not revealed too many details yet, both devices are still very exciting. The full range of technical details about the two smartphones should not be available until this fall. However, the experts from The Verge have already had the honor of laying their hands on the two flagships from Google. A few more technical details have leaked out.

Thus, the Google Pixel 6 is supposed to come with a pretty 6.4-inch AMOLED display, which offers a 1,080p resolution. A refresh rate of 90 Hz is supposed to ensure smooth scrolling. The Pixel 6 Pro offers a bit more display power. Its AMOLED screen has a QHD resolution and measures 6.7 inches. Thanks to a 120 Hz refresh rate, the Pro model is in the same league as the big ones from Samsung and Co. The display is also supposed to play a decisive role in unlocking. Google wants to integrate the fingerprint sensor into the display of both smartphones.

Vertical camera bar

The Pro model of the upcoming Pixel generation wants to score with an impressive camera technology in addition to a powerful display. Thus, the fancy-looking camera bar is supposed to have a total of three different cameras in it. Especially compared to the Pixel 5, Google wants to improve a lot. Besides the main camera, an ultra-wide-angle camera and a telephoto lens are used. While the latter is supposed to offer a 4x optical zoom, Google promises a 150% higher light intensity for the ultra-wide-angle lens. The specs themselves do not sound too impressive, especially in view of the technology in iPhone 12, Galaxy S21 and co. However, as in the previous Pixel generations, the software is supposed to be the focus in the upcoming version. The previously highlighted Tensor SoC is supposed to get the best possible result out of every photo.
