RedMagic 8 Pro: Nubia officially unveils new gaming smartphone

Nubia has officially unveiled its new gaming smartphone, the RedMagic 8 Pro, in China. The Pro 8 and Pro 9+ rely on an edgy design and a strong configuration and already come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

ZTE subsidiary Nubia has unveiled the RedMagic 8 Pro and RedMagic 8 Pro+ gaming smartphone in China, which will be released much earlier than the Pro 7 this year. At the same time, they also announced an international launch event, whose teaser website hints at a global unveiling on January 16, 2023.

From a technical perspective, both gaming smartphones rely on up-to-date hardware, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, which is supported by 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM, as well as 128 GB or 256 GB of system memory. The 8 Pro+ offers up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 terabyte of system storage.

Both smartphones rely on a RedCoreR2 add-on chip, which is again likely to be used for various gaming features, as well as 2068 mm² vapor-chamber cooling.

The only other difference between the RedMagic 8 Pro and RedMagic 8 Pro+ is the battery. This holds 6,000 mAh in the normal Pro and can be charged quickly with 80 watts, in the Pro+ it turns out smaller with 5,000 mAh, but can be charged with 165 watts.

Display and camera

Otherwise, the RedMagic 8 Pro, like the Pro+, relies on a 6.8-inch AMOLED display in 20:9 format that resolves with 2,480 x 1,116 pixels. The refresh rate is 120 Hz, and the touch rate is 960 Hz.

In addition, there are two shoulder keys that are supposed to be especially suitable for gaming and offer a sampling rate of 520 Hz.

There is also an invisible selfie camera below the display that has a resolution of 16 megapixels. A triple camera setup is available on the rear. Here, Nubia relies on a 50-megapixel main camera with Samsung Isocell GN5 sensor, an 8 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2 MP macro camera.

In addition to a USB 3.2 Gen 1 USB-C port, there’s a 3.5mm jack, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC. The 8 Pro and 8 Pro+ also support Snapdragon Sound for high-resolution sound.

Prices and Availability

The Nubia RedMagic 8 Pro and RedMagic 8 Pro+ will go on sale in China as early as December 28, 2022. Prices start at 3,999 yuan, which is the equivalent of around 540 euros. The Pro+ starts at 5,200 yuan (around 701 euros) and costs a whopping 6,999 yuan, which is just under 944 euros, in the top configuration with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB system storage. The European launch will probably be shortly after the unveiling in mid or late January 2023.
