Synology BeeDrive: Simple backup solution via USB or WLAN

Synology, a well-known network storage manufacturer, has introduced a new backup solution called BeeDrive. Unlike traditional network storage, BeeDrive is aimed more at individuals and is described as a personal backup disk. It is a direct attached storage that connects directly to a PC or notebook. The connection is made via USB 3.2 Gen 2 with a maximum possible data rate of 10 Gbps, which enables a fast backup of even larger amounts of data. Up to 1,050 MB/s is said to be possible.

Various features

The BeeDrive can be used not only via a wired connection, but also via WiFi. A feature called BeeDrop allows easy storage of files, which can then be accessed across operating system boundaries. Windows will initially be supported, with macOS support to follow later this year. Apps are offered for iOS and Android.

Support for up to 5 file versions means that it is also possible to jump back to earlier file versions. Two-way synchronization is also possible.

Mobile use and iOS photo backup

The BeeDrive also offers special features for iPhone users. For example, the mobile drive can be accessed via WLAN and then serves as a storage destination for iPhone users who want to make a local backup of their photo archive. The accompanying BeeDrive application automatically converts photos in Apple HEIF format to JPEG format during backup, and backs up Live Photos in two separate files.

Availability and Price

The BeeDrive will be available starting June 7 and will come in two storage capacities of one or two terabytes. Synology offers a 3-year manufacturer warranty. Prices for the German market are €141.61 and €236.81 including 19% VAT, respectively.
