Synology DiskStation DS723+: new powerful NAS with compact design

Synology kicks off 2023 with a new high-performance NAS. The Synology DiskStation DS723+ comes with two bays and marks the smallest expandable model among its all-in-one solutions for home offices and small businesses.

Synology DiskStation DS723+ unveiled

After the new WRX560 router in November, January is initially all about a new NAS again. The new Synology DiskStation DS723+ is said to be an ideal entry into centralized data storage for teams and small businesses, or to be used as an edge node in distributed systems.

Out of the box, the NAS comes with two bays, though this can be expanded to 7 drive bays with the DX517 expansion unit. The built-in PCIe slot allows performance to be further extended with 10GbE networking and M.2 NVMe SSDs for fast cache or additional SSD storage pools.

At the same time, the manufacturer relies on an ultra-compact desktop design: just 166 mm x 106 mm x 223 mm is the size of the 1.51 kg NAS. The DiskStation DS723+ is powered by an AMD Ryzen R1600 dual-core CPU with 4 threads, which clocks up to a maximum of 3.1 GHz. Two GB of DDR4 RAM is included ex works, expandable up to 32 GB.

“With its extremely compact form factor, it’s especially attractive for those who need less storage capacity but don’t want to sacrifice the convenience of centralized data storage and future scalability,” said Michael Wang, product manager at Synology.

Security and smart features

Synology DiskStation DS723+ provides user-friendly file sharing and management with Synology Drive. This allows data to be accessed across platforms with data protection on par with local solutions, the manufacturer promises.

For example, businesses with multiple locations can access data on the NAS and synchronize it between locations or mirror it on Synology devices.

Synology Hybrid Share combines the benefits of local solutions and the cloud by storing infrequently used data in the cloud. Files that are used frequently, on the other hand, remain in local storage and are therefore quickly accessible thanks to 10 GB/s LAN.

Windows and Linux systems, VMs running Hyper-V/VMware, and accounts in Microsoft 365/Google Workspace can all be backed up to the DS723+ using Synology’s Active Backup Suite. For added protection, backups and snapshots of data stored on the NAS can also be created and stored on an external server or in the cloud.

Also suitable as a video management system

When combined with Synology Surveillance Station, Synology DiskStation DS723+ becomes a powerful video management system. Over 8,300 P-cameras and ONVIF devices are currently supported to store private and local recordings.

Up to 40 cameras can be quickly set up and managed in the customizable interface, and even floor plans or maps from Google Maps/OpenStreetMap can be displayed when larger areas need to be monitored.

Price and Availability

The Synology DiskStation DS723+ is available now from resellers and partners worldwide. The manufacturer does not provide pricing details, but does provide more details and specifications on the official product website.
