Synology DS120j – Updated 1-Bay NAS with Doubled Memory

Synology has released an updated version of its DS119j NAS, which is particularly popular with home users. The new Synology DS120j NAS is supposed to serve like its predecessor mainly for the archiving of photos and videos and to enable the access to the collection of several devices. Thanks to Synology Drive software, files from PC and MAC can be automatically synchronized with network storage, similar to Dropbox. The DS120j entry-level model also supports Synology’s QuickConnect, allowing data access over the Internet.

According to the manufacturer, the maximum read speed is 112 MB/s, and the write speed is up to 106 MB/s, exactly the same as its predecessor. Also the price and the built-in Marvell Armada 3700 88F3720 processor (800 MHz) are unchanged. Only the RAM was doubled from 256 MB to 512 MB.

The power consumption of the Synology DS120j NAS is only 4.68 watts in idle mode. As soon as the hard disk is active, 9.81 watts are needed. To prevent the hard disk from overheating during continuous operation, the 60 mm fan known from the predecessor is still available. External storage media can be connected to the NAS via two USB 2.0 ports. The file formats ext4, ext3, FAT, NTFS, HFS+, exFAT are supported. The internal hard disk can only be formatted via ext4.

The price of the now available Synology DS120j 1-Bay DiskStation is currently 110 Euro. However, a hard disk has to be purchased.
