The MG5 Electric is the first E-Combi to come to Germany

Anyone who decides to buy an electric car still has to make a few compromises. For one thing, the infrastructure of charging stations is still rather sluggish in some regions of Germany. But another problem with many models is the limited space. Classic station wagons with spacious trunks are currently only available as plug-in hybrids. The MG5 now wants to change that. This is set to launch in March 2022 at a price of 38,490 euros.

The first electric station wagon for Germany

The MG5 Electric is probably the first e-flitzer suitable for families and vacations to come to Germany. The station wagon, which comes from MG Motor, is to be launched as early as next month and comes with an attractive price tag. If you deduct all the currently applicable purchase premiums from the gross price of the vehicle, you end up with an attractive 28,920 euros.

Considering the performance on offer, this is definitely a respectable deal. However, it’s important to note that not all MG5 Electric is the same. The station wagon is available in various configurations. The aforementioned price does not apply to the entry-level model with basic equipment. This is to be launched later and will be available at an even lower price.

First version with 400 km range

MG Motor Motor is equipping the version that goes on sale next month with a 61.1 kWh battery and a 115 kW electric motor. With the help of the battery, the car should be able to cover up to 400 km. The motor, in turn, enables acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 8 seconds. Not bad for a station wagon! Another model, which is to go on sale at a later date, is to be offered by MG Motor at a price of 35,490 euros. Minus the government subsidy, the final purchase price would then be an even better 25,920 euros. However, the cheaper version comes with a significantly slimmed-down battery, which only has 50.3 kWh to offer.

According to MG Motor, this should make about 320 km possible. The installed electric motor is supposed to be stronger than in the “March model” with 130 kW. Both motors should be able to reach a top speed of 185 km/h. Charging is to be possible either by direct current or alternating current. The MG5 will be able to charge up to 87 kW at a DC charging station. Up to 11 kW should be possible at the more common AC charging station. It is said to take less than three quarters of an hour to charge the battery from 5 percent to 80 percent.

Electrifying vacation carriage?

Away from the motorization, one can also opt for one of two equipment variants. There is “Comfort” on the one hand and “Luxury” on the other. Depending on the variant, there should not only be visual differences, but also comfort improvements. In addition to a 360-degree camera, automatic climate control, for example, is not a problem.

If you opt for a station wagon, you want a large trunk above all else. And the MG5 definitely seems to have that. A total of 479 liters can be stored in the rear compartment of the 4.60-long station wagon. If you fold down the rear seat, you even get 1,367 liters.

The competition is asleep

It’s quite astonishing that despite the e-car boom, the first true electric station wagon is only now hitting German dealerships. Given the popularity of family-compatible vehicles in Germany, this is not really comprehensible. In this context, one has to look at the VW Group in particular. The latter announced almost three years ago that it would expand its ID portfolio with a Passat-style station wagon.

When the concept was unveiled, the name was “ID Space Vizzion.” But the development seems to have taken a lot of time. In the meantime, not only the planned release date has changed, but also the name. The family car, which has now been renamed “Aero B,” will not be launched until 2023. Originally, the electric station wagon, which is to be based on the technology of the ID.3, was to go on sale in 2021, as was the ID.4. Hopefully it will be worth the wait.
