Apple unveiled tvOS 17 at WWDC 2023, the latest version of the operating system for Apple TV 4K. One of the most important new features is the integration of FaceTime and video conferencing. Users can now make FaceTime calls directly from their Apple TV, or start calls on their iPhone or iPad and then transfer them to their Apple TV. The FaceTime app uses the camera and microphone of the connected iPhone or iPad to provide seamless communication.
A new control center and improved integration with iPhone
tvOS 17 introduces a new Control Center that makes it easier to access important settings and information. In addition, tvOS 17 improves integration between Apple TV and iPhone. Users can launch the Apple TV remote from the iPhone’s control center to find their Siri Remote (2nd generation or newer). When users approach the Remote, a circle on the screen will enlarge to guide them to their destination.
Improvements for Apple Fitness+ and support for third-party VPN
tvOS 17 also brings improvements to Apple Fitness+. These include Custom Plans, a way for Fitness+ users to get customized workout or meditation plans based on day, duration, workout type and more. The Stack feature allows users to select multiple workouts and meditations and perform them seamlessly one after the other. And Audio Focus lets users focus on the volume of music or the voice of trainers.
In addition, tvOS 17 now supports VPN third-party apps. This can be especially beneficial for enterprise and education users who want to access content through their private networks.
Availability
The tvOS 17 beta is available now to developers and will be made available as a free software update for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD in the fall of 2023.
