Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro officially unveiled

In one of the last tech events of the year, Chinese company Xiaomi unveiled two new smartphones, among others. The Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro are already launching in China, while the release in this country is still waiting until next year.

What’s inside the Xiaomi 12

With the Xiaomi 12, we can expect an exciting smartphone next year, which the manufacturer likes to compare with the Apple iPhone 13. It relies on a 6.28-inch 12-bit AMOLED with Full HD resolution (419 PPI pixel density) and a maximum brightness of 1,100 nits, as well as a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. It is protected by the particularly robust Gorilla Glass Victus.

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC works inside, which is supposed to bring a significant improvement in performance compared with the currently popular Snapdragon 888. Eight or twelve gigabytes of RAM are optionally available for the working memory. The internal storage can be either 128 or 256 GB, whereas the model with 12 GB of RAM is only offered with 256 GB of storage.

The stereo speakers are from Harman-Kardon and even support Dolby Atmos. However, the focus of the Xiaomi 12 is once again on the smartphone’s innovative camera setup.

The cameras of the Xiaomi 12

For the main camera in the rear triple-cam setup, the Xiaomi 12 relies on a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 sensor (f/1.88 aperture), which has already been used in the OnePlus 9 Pro or the Oppo Find X3 Pro, for example.

It is assisted by a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle camera with f/2.4 aperture and 123-degree field of view, as well as a macro camera with f/2.4 aperture. A newly developed Cyberfocus technology is supposed to provide efficient focus tracking.

Thus, the Xiaomi 12 is supposed to be able to trigger a whopping 53.7% faster than Huawei’s P50 Pro, for example. Burst and night shots should also benefit from the new technology and get a performance boost.

On the front, Xiaomi relies on a 32-megapixel selfie camera complete with Staggered HDR feature, which is supposed to provide excellent selfies regardless of the lighting conditions.

Xiaomi 12 Pro: The real flagship from China

A bit more power and features are in the top model flagship Xiaomi 12 Pro, which will even reach retailers in an olive green variant made of vegan leather. Xiaomi also relies on an AMOLED panel here, but it is superior to the Xiaomi 12 in all aspects.

For example, a second-generation LTPO backplane is used that displays the dynamic refresh rate between 1 Hz and 120 Hz more efficiently. The display itself relies on a QHD resolution (3200 x 1400 pixels) and is considerably larger at 6.73 inches. An E5 Micro-Lens is also supposed to provide a significantly higher display brightness.

The fingerprint sensor is installed underneath the display. A contrast ratio of 8000000:1 is achieved. The maximum brightness of up to 1,500 nits is even higher than that of the Xiaomi 12, but the color depth of 10 bits is lower.

In addition, the Xiaomi 12 Pro offers super fast charging with 120 watts via USB Type-C or 50 watts wireless charging thanks to the specially developed Surge P1 charging chip, which supplies the 4,600 mAh battery with new energy and charges it completely in just under 20 minutes.

Of course, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor is also at work inside the 12 Pro, which is supported by at least 8 GB of LPDDR5 working memory and 128 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. An improved cooling system with Vapor Chamber keeps the smartphone cool.

Triple camera setup in the Xiaomi 12 Pro

The Xiaomi 12 Pro also relies on three rear-mounted cameras. However, the 50-megapixel main camera uses a Sony IMX707 with a size of 1/1.28 inches, which is a better sensor than in the normal 12 model.

This should especially benefit pictures in poor lighting, since the sensor captures more light thanks to a 50 percent larger surface. Two more 50 MP cameras round out the setup: a portrait camera (telephoto, 2x optical zoom) with an f/1.9 aperture, and an ultra-wide-angle camera with a 115-degree field of view and 14 mm focal length.

Xiaomi 12 Pro Camera

On the other hand, the same 32-megapixel camera that is used on the Xiaomi 12 sits at the front. Moreover, the same features are offered, while a special Night Mode 2.0 can be used with all focal lengths and is supposed to ensure particularly clear and sharp night shots.

Prices and Availability

The Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro will initially launch in China. They will start shipping in early January 2022, while both smartphones will find their way to Germany after that. The Xiaomi 12 starts at a price of 3,700 yuan, which is equivalent to around 500 euros. In the top configuration with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, 4,400 yuan are called for, which corresponds to around 610 euros.

The Xiaomi 12 Pro costs at least 4,700 Yuan (around 630 Euros), whereas the top model is priced at 5,400 Yuan, which is just under 750 Euros. That is a steep price even for China. Thus, it can be assumed that the top model in the best possible configuration will probably exceed the 1000 euro mark in this country.
