Edifier S1000W review: Powerful Hi-Res speakers at a fair price

That manufacturer Edifier can build excellent speakers at an almost unbeatable price, we have already been able to determine several times in the test. In January 2022, the bookshelf speakers Edifier R1700BT in review scored not only with a high-quality design, but also with rich sound. The aim is to further expand these qualities with the audiophile 2.0 bookshelf speakers including a Class D amplifier. And this works excellently, as our Edifier S1000W test proves.

Edifier S1000W review: design and workmanship

  • High-quality and chic appearance
  • Walnut wood look merely foiled
  • Impeccable, convincing workmanship

A full 17 kilograms in weight brings the box of the Edifier S1000W in the test on the scales, which already testifies to a high-quality workmanship. The scope of delivery includes, in addition to the speakers, a remote control including necessary batteries, as well as all potentially required cables. Among them are two 3.5 mm RCA audio cables, an optical Toslink cable, a connection cable for both speakers and of course the power cable.

In terms of design, the S1000W relies on a high-quality and classy wooden look including a dark, textured center section. However, the manufacturer tricks a bit, because the sides are MDF panels that are foiled in walnut wood look. But anyway, the speakers look chic in any case.

The slightly angled shape of the speakers optimizes the sound. The speakers themselves come in at a size of 20 cm x 35 cm x 27 cm and feature rubberized feet on the bottom to ensure a secure grip on all surfaces.

The Edifier S1000W are 2-way speakers. Both speakers rely on a 25 mm, 25 watt titanium tweeter and a 140 mm mid-woofer, each capable of 35 watts. So, in total, we come up with an output power of 120 watts. The controls are located on the back of the right speaker, while on the left only the connecting cable between the two speakers is connected.

There is nothing to complain about the build quality, which is on a very high level, corresponding to the price. Only the cover of the battery compartment of the remote control opened a bit stiffly for the first time in our test model, but after that it went smoothly.

Operation and setup

  • Simple, quick setup
  • Excellent operation via remote control and app

Setting up the Edifier S1000W is as simple as can be. Simply connect both speakers together, plug in the power cable and you’re ready to go. After the first power-up, the speakers switch to setup mode and can thus be paired with the purely optional smartphone app. Alternatively, you can start enjoying the music right away.

The included remote control allows switching between sources, increasing or decreasing the volume, and of course the other basics like skipping, pausing, or resuming a song.

The remote control or app is used to operate the speakers.

On the back of the speakers, you’ll find a total of three knobs that allow you to adjust the volume, but also fine-tune the treble and bass to influence the sound.

Bluetooth pairing can be started by pressing and holding the Bluetooth button on the remote control for five seconds. A blue flashing LED on the front of the right speaker reveals that the S1000W are in pairing mode, whereupon the speakers are also immediately recognized by smartphone and co.

The connection selection is pleasing. More adjustments can be made on the back panel.

Edifier S1000W sound: How good do the speakers sound?

  • Very good, detailed sound
  • Adjustable treble and midrange
  • Hi-Res sound; aptX codec via Bluetooth

Whether used on a PC, with a smartphone as a playback device, or as a true audio hub in your own living room, the Edifier S1000W play up quite strongly in the sound test, scoring points for a rich, detailed sound and an impressive maximum volume that has the setup dancing right along.

I found the mids and trebles to be astonishingly good; they are very well differentiated and skillfully emphasize all of the music’s details, no matter how small. And that without it becoming unpleasantly shrill in the highs. The sound is pleasantly airy and lively and cuts a very good figure in all scenarios.

The rich bass also comes across nicely detailed and reaches far down into the low bass range, while the bass is staged precisely. If you like, you can get an extra boost when you increase the bass control. Personally, the middle setting was already a bit too much of a good thing for me, so I set the bass there to -4. In my eyes, this would once again tease out more details.

Hi-Res certification also allows content to be played back at up to 24-bit and 192 kHz, which teases out even more detail and improves the sound if the source material is suitable. However, the Edifier S1000W don’t let their guard down when it comes to PC gaming either, sucking us right into the action.

App connection and connectivity

  • Companion app with more manageable features
  • WLAN integration along with AirPlay 2
  • Amazon Alexa supported

The Edifier S1000W support Bluetooth 5.0 including high-resolution aptX codec. With the help of the companion app, they can also be integrated into their own WLAN network and, for example, paired with the Amazon account to be operated with the voice assistant Amazon Alexa. However, they are only used as players and do not have an integrated Alexa assistant.

AirPlay 2 is also supported, so a wireless multi-room setup can be created. However, I could not try that out in the Edifier S1000W test. The Edifier Home smartphone app serves as the control center and allows, for example, streaming through popular streaming services.

Besides the option to update the speakers via firmware update, however, the app offers little scope, but can at least replace the remote control to a large extent. The volume can be adjusted in the app, and you can also change the source and initiate the connection to your Amazon account here. Unfortunately, there is nothing more to see here.

Edifier S1000W review: conclusion

With the Edifier S1000W, the manufacturer delivers excellent speakers in the test that have a great sound. They impress with an excellent selection of connections and – especially via Wi-Fi or cable – an excellent, high-resolution sound. But the connection via Bluetooth also scores with many details thanks to Qualcomm aptX.

The looks and build quality also more than live up to the comparatively high price, even though Edifier tricks a bit with a walnut wood finish. Nevertheless, there is not the slightest thing to criticize.

If you are looking for very good-sounding, versatile and elegant-looking 2.0 speakers, the Edifier S1000W will be a good choice. In any case, the bookshelf speakers do not afford any real points of criticism.
