Meross MSS315 in test: socket outlet with Matter support

Matter was eagerly awaited as a new protocol for smart home products. It enables direct control without clouds, hubs or anything else. In the meantime, a number of products with Matter support have been released and Meross is now following suit. In addition to Matter, the MSS315 socket can also measure power consumption. We’ll tell you what else the device can do in the test.

Technical data

Input voltage 100-240V, 50/60Hz
Output 100-240V, 50/60Hz, max 16A
DPI 100 – 26,000 with 1 DPI steps, 650 IPS and 50 G acceleration
Dimensions 5 x 5 x 6.4cm (without pins)
Buttons 1x On/Off
Wireless standard IEEE 802.11 b/g/n, 2.4GHz, IPv6 network required

The housing of the MSS315 socket outlet has a slim design. However, the product is not really discreet compared to other sockets such as the Nous A1T*. There is an illuminated switch on the housing to turn it on and off. This provides haptic feedback after confirmation. The switch LED can be switched off in the app.

The support of Matter makes it easier for users to set up devices. For example, they can be set up via Apple Homekit or directly in the Google Home app. Once the MSS315 socket is plugged in, it is integrated via Add device . Simply scan the QR code and you’re done. It is important that only 2.4 GHz WLAN is supported. Make sure that your smartphone is not connected to a 5 GHz WLAN.

However, the socket can only be switched on and off in this way. To use the full range of functions, such as measuring power consumption, there is no way around the Meross app. A user account must be registered here. Integration into the app also works here using the printed QR code.

We then have access to the consumption data in the app and can also display statistics. We have access to annual, monthly, weekly and daily data. This allows us to see in detail how much a connected appliance or appliances consume. You can also enter your electricity price (euros per kWh). If you wish, you can also export the data. You can select the period to be exported and then receive an e-mail.

If you have a balcony power plant, the Meross MSS315 Smart Plug offers an interesting feature. You can switch from monitoring mode to production mode. The overview then shows how much electricity has already been fed into the grid. You can obtain exactly the same statistics as for consumption. Important: However, the MSS315 is not suitable for outdoor use.

Can the Meross MSS315 socket be integrated into Home Assistant? Both with the SkyConnect dongle for Matter support and via a separate integration for Meross devices. The socket can also only be switched on and off via Matter. Thanks to the integration, we can at least use the current consumption. We are not provided with overall data.

Although protection against accidental contact is provided, we should mention that only the right-hand side of the plug is switched off. This is important because, depending on the orientation of the plug, the phase may not be switched off and 230V may still flow into the connected appliance. The Meross MSS315 socket can work with 16 amps, so theoretically just under 3600 watts can be used by the consumer. A good value, as some well-known manufacturers only offer 10 amps. Unfortunately, the socket has a rather high consumption of 1.1W in operation and 0.6W in standby.

Conclusion on the Meross MSS315 socket outlet

Our test did not reveal any disconnections. At least not when the socket was switched. The standard Matter allows you to easily integrate the MSS315 into your smart home if you don’t want to use the manufacturer’s app. However, this results in a loss of functionality, in this case the consumption monitor – not an unimportant feature. If you are using a balcony power station and want to monitor the electricity generated, there is no way around the Meross app.

The narrow design of the socket makes it suitable for use in open areas, even if there are better alternatives. The LED can be switched off for rooms where it should be dark.

For around 20 euros, the Meross MSS315 can be recommended. Although the Matter support is an additional small selling point, it is not decisive, as the socket can only be switched on and off. The manufacturer’s app, on the other hand, offers a good overview and good features. Together with the integration into Home Assistant, the product is definitely worth a look.

Matter support makes it easier to set up the very good Meross MSS315 socket. Unfortunately, features are lost as a result.
