UGREEN Revodok 9-in-1 (CM639) review – Affordable docking station

After we recently had a look at the Revodok 11-in-1 (CM681) (review) from the Chinese manufacturer UGREEN, we have the Revodok 9-in-1 (CM639) in review today. The docking station offers nine outputs, including HDMI, USB, Ethernet and card reader. You have to do without additional video outputs, probably due to the low price. How the UGREEN Revodok 9-in-1 (CM639) performs and what you have to do without compared to the more expensive models can be found out in our test.

Scope of delivery

The UGREEN Revodok 9-in-1 (CM639) comes in a compact white cardboard box with green accents. On the front is an image of the docking station and a listing of ports. A logo also indicates support for resolutions up to 4K/60 Hz. On the back, UGREEN once again lists all ports including their number and specifications in a table.

Besides the Revodok 9-in-1, only a user manual is found inside the box. A USB-C connection cable is permanently connected to the docking station. A charger for charging the connected device is not included, but due to the low price this is not to be expected.

Design and workmanship

The UGREEN Revodok 9-in-1 (CM639) is made almost entirely of gray aluminum, just like the manufacturer’s other models. Only the short sides of the case are made of black plastic. The docking station has a footprint of 57 x 141 mm and is 16 mm high. With a weight of 162 g, it is rather light and is thus also suitable for on the go.

The Ethernet port is located on the short side of the case, while the other ports are on the long sides. The USB-C type connection cable is ~20 cm long and firmly attached to the other short side. This has the advantage that you do not need a separate cable, but also the disadvantage that you cannot easily replace it if the cable breaks. Unfortunately, UGREEN does not use rubber strips or similar on the bottom of the case, which makes the docking station slip easily and can also cause minor scratches on the base.

The material quality and workmanship of the UGREEN Revodok 9-in-1 (CM639) can convince in the test. The aluminum case looks high-quality and well-made, only the missing rubber strips on the underside are cause for criticism.

Connections of the UGREEN Revodok 9-in-1

The UGREEN Revodok 9-in-1 (CM639) is connected to the computer via USB-C with the fixed connection cable and provides nine outputs. There are only USB ports on the side of the case that usually faces the user. Two of the four ports are Type-A with a transfer rate of up to 5 Gbps, one Type-A with up to 10 Gbps and one Type-C with up to 10 Gbps.

On the side facing away from the user, there are 1x HDMI, 1x USB and a card reader. The HDMI port supports resolutions up to 4K/60 Hz. The USB port is Type-C and is used for powering up to 100 W. The notebook connected to the docking station is charged with up to 90 W in the process. The card reader offers two slots, one for SD and another for TF cards (MicroSD). On the short side of the case is the Ethernet port.

The Revodok 9-in-1 thus offers the probably most important and also most frequently needed ports, but the number of video outputs is very limited with 1x HDMI. The other ports, on the other hand, are available in sufficient numbers and are up to date.

Practical test of the UGREEN Revodok 9-in-1

In the practical test, we used the UGREEN Revodok 9-in-1 (CM639) on both a desktop PC and a Lenovo notebook. Further, the following devices were used, among others:

  • Charger: Anker 65W (USB-C)
  • Monitor: MSI Optix MAG341CQ
  • External SSD: Crucial X10 Pro 2 TB (review)
  • External SSD: Kingston XS1000 1 TB (review)
  • Memory card: SanDisk Extreme microSDXC 128 GB
  • Various wired keyboards

The UGREEN Revodok 9-in-1 (CM639) does not have a power button and is active immediately after connecting. After the first connection, an Ethernet driver was downloaded and installed via Windows Update, the installation of further drivers was not necessary. Within the test period of several weeks, the docking station including the connected devices was always recognized quickly and reliably.

This also applies to the MSI Optix MAG341CQ monitor connected via HDMI. Both duplicating and expanding our screen worked smoothly in the test.

Furthermore, we performed performance tests with an external SSD and a microSD card to detect possible losses due to the Revodok 9-in-1. We used the Kingston XS1000 1 TB as an external SSD, which achieves transfer rates of up to 1,050 MB/s and thus makes good use of the USB ports’ maximum transfer rate. Performance losses are measurable in the AS SSD benchmark and CrystalDiskMark, but not noticeable and amount to less than 2% in sequential read and write, for example. We used a SanDisk Extreme microSDXC 128 GB as microSD card. We could not measure any performance losses compared to other card readers.

When it came to the Ethernet connection, we only noticed very slight differences in both down- and uploads as well as ping. However, these could also be due to the slightly fluctuating speed, regardless of the Ethernet port used.

UGREEN Revodok 9-in-1 review: conclusion

The UGREEN Revodok 9-in-1 (CM639) turns out to be a good and affordable docking station in the test. The aluminum case is visually appealing, compact and well-made. However, rubber strips on the underside would be desirable. Furthermore, the Revodok 9-in-1 offers a variety of modern and fast ports, including 1x HDMI, 3x USB-A (1x of which 10 Gbps), 1x USB-C (10 Gbps), 1x USB-C for power supply, 1x RJ45 with up to 1000 Mbps and a card reader. We could confirm the stated transfer rates in the performance test. The differences to the direct connection with the notebook were very small.

On the other hand, there are restrictions in the video outputs. The docking station only offers 1x HDMI, which limits you to one monitor. However, if you only use one monitor anyway and place more value on the other connections, you can ignore this and save yourself the surcharge to other docking stations like the Revodok 11-in-1 (CM681) (review). Further, the Revodok 9-in-1 also doesn’t have a jack port and we’d like to see a changeable connection cable.

The recommended retail price of the UGREEN Revodok 9-in-1 (CM639) is ~70 €, but due to promotions or coupons, the price is usually significantly lower. Currently, the dock is already available for ~42 € (as of 10/25/2023) and thus also attractively priced and competitive. If you are looking for a good and cheap dock and only need a video output, you should take a closer look at the Revodok 9-in-1.

Visually appealing and well-made docking station that offers many ports including a card reader. However, it is not suitable for everyone due to only one video output.
