PS5: WLAN problems – here’s how to solve them

Your PS5 does not connect to the Internet? The Wi-Fi connection keeps dropping out? Such problems are probably familiar to most people. But what exactly can PS5 WLAN problems be traced back to? And how can you solve them? We’ll show you how to get your console up and running again in no time!

WLAN problems with the PS5

Unlike a few years ago, a PlayStation without an active Internet connection is largely useless today. The vast majority of games are no longer loaded onto the device via CD, but from an online store. Moreover, they require an Internet connection in many cases to be used to their full extent. WLAN problems have a correspondingly strong impact on the usability of a PS5.

Restart PS5

What applies to almost all electronic devices applies to the PS5: If there are problems, a restart helps. Experience has shown that WLAN problems can be solved well by restarting the console. In many cases, the connection is much more stable after a deliberate termination and reestablishment. Before you start a possibly lengthy troubleshooting, it therefore makes sense to take this less time-consuming and labor-intensive step first. To restart the PS5, press the black PS button and select “Restart PS5” in the menu that opens.

Restart router

If the problem is not solved by restarting the PS5, you can try to restart the router. It is possible that the problem is located there and not in the console. To do this, unplug the router’s power cable, wait at least ten seconds, and then plug it back in.

Other possible solutions

If the Wi-Fi problem is not solved either by restarting the PS5 or the router, you will have to start a more elaborate troubleshooting.

Where is the problem?

First, test whether the WLAN is working properly on other devices. If this is the case, there is a high probability that the problem lies with the router and not with the PlayStation. If this is the case, contact your Internet provider to find out if there are any problems. It’s possible that a problem has occurred outside of your control, and you’ll have to wait for it to be resolved. If this is not the case, you should contact your provider and report your problem. They will usually measure the line to find the source of the problem.

Select a different frequency band

You still have WLAN problems with your PS5? Then the problem is neither with the router nor with the internet provider. It is possible that the WLAN problems are due to the choice of frequency band. Today’s routers transmit in the 2.4 GHz frequency as well as in the 5 GHz frequency. Go into the settings of the PS5 by clicking on the gear icon on the home screen. Select the sub-item “Network” and then “Set up Internet connection”. Here you will find the sub-item “Wi-Fi frequency bands”. Change the setting from “Automatic” to “5 GHz” and test the connection again. If the PS5 WLAN still doesn’t work, test the 2.5 GHz band.

No solution in sight?

If all this doesn’t help, you can go through the following steps.

  1. Check if there are any issues with the PlayStation Network
  2. Test the PlayStation on a different Wi-Fi network.
  3. Reset the PS5.
