Outdoor fitness tracker: stay fit in spring with the latest technology

With the end of the dreary winter gray, not only are the tulips starting to sprout, the sun is shining and the temperatures are rising. People are also venturing outside more often again – and are definitely being active. Spring seems to be a good time for many people to get back into sport – after all, it’s the time of year when it’s neither too hot nor too cold and usually dry. If you really want to get or stay fit, you’ll be on the right track faster with technical aids. We present the most popular outdoor fitness trackers for spring!

Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro

The Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro offers a number of advantages that make it an attractive fitness tracker. In particular, the relatively large OLED display with a diameter of 1.74 inches sets it apart from the standard version. The color display, which has a resolution of 336 pixels x 480 pixels, is easy to read even in direct sunlight and clearly displays all important information. However, the Smart Band 8 Pro is not only visually impressive, but also with its basic functions. For example, the device has precise heart rate measurement, sleep monitoring, blood oxygen measurement and a variety of sports modes that can be used to track numerous types of sport – allowing you to optimize your training. It also has a long battery life of up to 14 days, making it comfortable to use in everyday life. The fact that it is waterproof to a depth of 50 meters is a major plus point: swimmers who are slowly returning to the outdoor pools in spring can also use the band. The Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro uses the free Mi Fitness app for a detailed analysis of the recorded data. The connection also unlocks a number of additional functions. For example, the fitness tracker can be used as a shutter release for the cell phone camera. Messaging to the tracker is also possible after pairing via the app. It is interesting to note that all notifications are switched off as soon as the tracker is removed from the arm. The device recognizes this automatically. With a price of around 64 euros, the Xiaomi product is also reasonably priced.

Fitbit Charge 6

The Fitbit Charge 6 is another popular fitness tracker that will be seen more often on sports fields, in swimming pools and parks in the spring months. The latest Google model, which follows on from the 5-series version, should not only impress with its slim design and high-resolution color display, but also and above all with a significantly stronger integration of Google services compared to its predecessor. For example, the fitness tracker supports Google Maps and can be used to make payments thanks to Google Wallet.

The basic functions of the Fitbit Charge 6 include a pedometer, a calorie counter and an above-average sleep tracker. The device also has an integrated heart rate monitor, which can help to maintain the optimum heart rate range during early training. Another advantage of the Fitbit Charge 6 is the ability to show notifications from your smartphone on the display. This allows you to receive important calls or messages while you are training. An interesting extra that the competition cannot offer is the ability to write a single-channel ECG. This is particularly useful as it can be used to detect atrial fibrillation. However, the single-lead ECG does not replace a visit to the doctor.

Just like the Xiaomi model, the Google tracker is also equipped with its own app, which enables particularly comprehensive data evaluation and therefore fitness optimization. The biggest disadvantage here is that many functions are only accessible for an additional charge – and that at a purchase price of a hefty 115 euros. However, if you’re prepared to shell out the cash, the Fitbit Charge 6 is a state-of-the-art model that makes it easy to get an active start to spring.

Huawei Band 8

The Huawei Band 8 is the latest wearable from the controversial Chinese company – and at a price of 59 euros, it is one of the more affordable models on the market. It aims to score points with a compact design, a 1.47-inch AMOLED display and an optical heart rate sensor, among other things. In addition to heart rate, the fitness tracker can also measure blood oxygen saturation and sleep quality. A wide range of sports modes are also available, so that almost all sports enthusiasts will find what they are looking for. With a battery life of up to 9 days and additional functions such as automatically forwarded notifications and music control available after pairing with a cell phone, it is versatile and practical for everyday use.

Samsung Galaxy Fit 3

Samsung is also getting involved in the wearables market. It recently unveiled its latest fitness tracker, the Galaxy Fit 3. The fitness wristband also aims to impress with its design. It comes in a slim and lightweight housing with a 1.36-inch AMOLED display. The core functions include a continuous heart rate monitor, sleep monitoring, pedometer and activity tracker. Sports are therefore automatically recognized and tracked, making it easy to use.

The battery life of up to 7 days and the fact that the wristband is waterproof, making it ideal for use while swimming, ensure suitability for everyday use without any major inconveniences. Thanks to Bluetooth connectivity, it can – just like the other devices presented – be easily connected to the cell phone and subsequently show notifications from the smartphone on the display. The Samsung Health app also provides a way of comprehensively evaluating the tracked data and keeping an eye on progress.

More functions, more fitness

The brief introductions to the latest and most popular fitness trackers on the market clearly show the direction in which the journey is heading: trackers are no longer just pedometers, but now offer an enormous and constantly growing range of functions. The single-channel ECG may still be an exception, but it clearly shows the demands that manufacturers are now placing on their devices: They should make it possible to comprehensively monitor your own fitness and health. This makes them a perfect fit in an age characterized by limitless self-optimization – with them, there are hardly any limits. So if you want to use the spring to lower your blood pressure, increase your exercise, push your body weight into the green zone or generally become healthier, you can fall back on a pool of aids that can score points with documentation and assistance.
