BYD U9: Super sports car comes with exciting chassis

With the BYD U9, BYD is planning an impressive super sports car that will not have an expansive combustion engine but a powerful electric motor. It should already be clear that the eye-catching electric car will offer a lot of power. However, the Chinese car manufacturer has now announced further details. The car is to have a very special chassis. In good old lowrider style, this should not only enable the vehicle to dance and bounce. On top of that, the feature is supposed to allow you to drive on three wheels.

BYD U9 makes vehicle catalog complete

Until a few years ago, BYD was not a household name to many people in the Western Hemisphere. In the meantime, the automaker has made a name for itself in our climes as well. Given the fact that it is the world’s largest producer of electric cars, anything else would be surprising. The market size is mainly a result of the market strategy that the company pursues. For example, with models such as the compact E-SUV Atto 3, the E sedan Han and the all-electric station wagon Tang, the Chinese have now established a broad base outside China. However, with its three electric cars, the manufacturer has so far only served the lower to upper middle class.

This is soon to be a thing of the past. BYD is aiming higher and also wants to convince fans of supercars with the BYD U9. The first technical data sounds really impressive and underlines the classification as a sports car of the upper class. The car is supposed to be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2 seconds. This means it accelerates about as fast as the brutal Tesla Model S Plaid, which is currently the talk of the town among friends of sporty electric cars. But BYD only mentions its fast acceleration in a subordinate sentence. The real unique selling point is supposed to be the chassis. And it is precisely here that the Chinese could outbrake Tesla’s bolides.

Suspension enables dancing and bouncing

Actually, extremely flat supercars like the BYD U9 don’t exactly shine with a lush chassis. Rather, manufacturers try to save weight here and create the closest possible contact between the ground and the driver. The Chinese carmaker wants to swim against the tide and has equipped its sporty e-car with the Disus Intelligent Body Control System. Behind this is a chassis that is supposed to be capable of unusual actions. BYD talks about the car being able to jump, among other things. It is also supposed to be able to drive on just three wheels. That is quite practical in view of the very flat design. How much of it will be used in practice, however, is questionable.

However, the features of BYD’s specially developed chassis should have a positive impact throughout the ride. For example, the car can be brought into the perfect position at any time. This should also bring great advantages when parking or backing out, for example, which should make for more everyday usability than many other supercars. BYD itself emphasizes that it is the first Chinese manufacturer to incorporate this feature into a vehicle. To what extent we in Europe will benefit from the newly developed system is still uncertain. Finally, BYD has not said anything about whether the “Disus Intelligent Body Control System” will also be used outside of China. But even without this system, the super sports car should certainly find some willing buyers in our climes.
