Canon EOS R5 C: The smallest Cinema EOS camera ever

Photo and videography fans take note! Canon has announced its first Cinema EOS camera, the EOS R5 C, which is supposed to offer razor-sharp content thanks to 8K. This is a true hybrid model that combines the photo capabilities of the EOS R system with the video features of the Cinema EOS range.

A true first

The EOS R5 C seems to be a real cracker coming our way, and its pre-release specs are already whetting our appetites for more. On the one hand, there is the possibility to shoot internal movies at 30p as 8K RAW files. With an active power supply, the whole thing should even be possible at 60p. This should not only result in an extremely high-quality recording. On top of that, it creates the possibility of being able to use extensive features in post-production.

Since such powerful tasks can certainly push the hardware to its limits once in a while, Canon promises sophisticated cooling in the process, which should even allow 8K recordings for hours. Besides HDR support, the hybrid camera is also supposed to offer precise focusing (eye AF and EOS iTR AF X). The feature that autofocus should be able to follow a head even when the face is turned away from the camera sounds especially cool.

High-resolution sensor

The built-in sensor should be able to offer a resolution of 45 megapixels. In combination to the processor in the form of the DIGIC X, the EOS R5 C should always be able to offer a “first-class image quality”. The CPU relies on a sophisticated algorithm whose task is to reduce image noise to a minimum. Accordingly, the hybrid camera could also be suitable for friends of low-light shooting. Creatives should also benefit from a wonderfully convenient workflow. This is reflected, for example, in the choice between three different types of RAW formats, which can be selected depending on the scene.

Innovative RF bayonet

Canon is giving its upcoming EOS R5 C a thoroughly exciting bayonet. This is supposed to be characterized by a short flange focal length and thus ensure the best and fastest possible connection between lens and camera. Speaking of lenses. Here, the hybrid camera seems to be extremely compatible. In addition to EF and RF lenses, it should also be possible to use the models from the Cinema series. Even lenses from other manufacturers can be mounted if the requirements are met. VR recording should also be possible thanks to compatibility with the Canon RF 5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye lens.

Good for mobile use

According to the manufacturer, the EOS R5 C should be characterized by a compact, but also durable case. This should make it particularly suitable for use on the move. A weight of just 680 grams, the use of a magnesium alloy and protection against dust and splash water underline this.

To ensure that you always have the right handles at hand when you’re on the go, Canon builds in 13 configurable buttons. When shooting your photos, you look through a 0.5-inch color viewfinder, which relies on OLED technology. You can view your results on a touch-sensitive, 3.2-inch LCD screen on the back, which features a foldable design.

Price and Availability

The EOS R5 C is the smallest EOS camera in the Cinema lineup coming our way. What Canon has released so far about the hybrid camera sounds really promising. If you are interested, you will not only have to wait until March 2022, when the camera is supposed to go on sale. On top of that, you should bring a bulging wallet. With an MSRP of 4,999 Euros, that is a basic requirement.
