With its Wallet and Pay services, Google offers the option of paying in supermarkets and the like via smartphone and smartwatch. As of now, cards from American Express are also supported in Germany.
Background payment method for billing
The service works relatively simply: via the Wallet app, a card must be deposited, via which all payments made via Google Pay are ultimately processed. Since this year, only the payment function itself is called Pay, while the app is called Wallet again. So Google does not act as a bank, but as a mere intermediary between the bank and the company that is to receive the money. Until now, it was not possible to deposit cards from American Express in Germany.
According to reports, this has now changed, which should make the service more attractive for at least some people. However, the interest in the smartphone payment function is rather low overall. For this reason, Google has hardly put any further investments into its Pay function after the market launch.
