Google Pixel Watch: First smartwatch in slim design officially presented

Besides the new Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones, Google has finally officially unveiled its first smartwatch. The Google Pixel Watch relies on a sustainable, round design and comes with all the features of the FitBit fitness tracker.

The Google Pixel Watch in detail

After many details had already been leaked in advance, the Google Pixel Watch was officially unveiled yesterday. It relies on a stainless steel housing, which consists of 80 percent recycled stainless steel. The straps, which come in different types and colors, are also particularly sustainable.

The Pixel Watch relies on a round case with a diameter of 41 mm, is 12.3 mm high and weighs just 36 grams without the wristband. Nevertheless, the smartwatch features numerous sensors, GPS, Wi-Fi, LTE and a 294 mAh battery.

According to Google, the battery should last up to 24 hours and charges magnetically via USB Type-C. The battery is recharged in 30 minutes. It charges to 50 percent in 30 minutes, and a full charge should take around 80 minutes.

The chip used is Samsung’s Exynos 9110, which is supported by a Cortex M33 coprocessor. WearOS 3.5 is used as the operating system, while 32 GB of eMMC flash memory and 2 GB of SDRAM are offered.

The smartwatch is operated with a side button, the haptic crown and the large AMOLED touchscreen with 320 ppi, which is protected with 3D Corning Gorilla Glass.

Fitness tracking with Fitbit

Fitbit, which has been part of Google for a year and a half, is responsible for health and fitness features. Therefore, the Google Pixel Watch relies on detailed fitness tracking and is said to offer the most accurate heart rate measurement ever in a Fitbit tracker thanks to machine learning (ML) and a special optimization.

The Fitbit UI has been completely redesigned in the process and now offers 40 different sports modes, a pedometer, distance measurements thanks to built-in GPS and activity zone minutes, which should provide more motivation during workouts.

Smart Google Help

The Google Pixel Watch can be further customized with Watchfaces and Tiles. The Google Assistant voice assistant is also available, while the smart home can be controlled directly via the watch with the Google Home app.

Furthermore, the smartwatch displays notifications from Gmail or Google Calendar and offers the option to make mobile payments via NFC with the revised Google Wallet app. In addition, there are various emergency functions, as well as fall detection in 2023.
