The affordable 4G mid-range smartphone X8 from Honor, which was introduced only in April, gets an upgrade. The Honor X8 5G now also includes 5G connectivity. The battery capacity and camera setup have also been adjusted. However, the features have been reduced in some places.
Honor X8 5G: All info about the smartphone
The inexpensive LTE smartphone Honor X8 has also been available in this country since the beginning of May 2022 and costs currently 229 euros at Amazon. With the Honor X8 5G, the company now introduced another variant that offers even more changes besides the faster 5G connectivity.
The 5G model no longer relies on a 4,000 mAh battery, but increases the capacity to a full 5,000 milliampere hours, which should speak for an excellent runtime. Charging is done with a maximum of 22.5 watts via USB Type-C.
There are also changes in the chip, because the Snapdragon 680 from the X8 is now replaced by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480+ in the new version. It has the necessary 5G modem and relies on Qualcomm’s faster Adreno 619 GPU. In return, the CPU clock rates are slightly lower in a direct comparison.
In addition, the Honor X8 5G comes with 6 GB of RAM, as well as 128 GB of system memory, which can also be expanded by up to 1 TB via microSD card. As a special bonus, the smartphone can also borrow 2 GB from the system memory thanks to HONOR RAM Turbo to reach 8 GB of RAM at a time.
Display, cameras and more
When it comes to the display, the Honor X8 5G relies on a 6.5-inch LC display with a resolution of 1,600 x 720 pixels in a 20:9 format. It is thus smaller than the display of the original X8, which has a resolution of 2388 x 1080 pixels on 6.7 inches. However, Honor does not mention details about the refresh rate.
There are also differences in terms of the cameras installed. For example, the new X8 5G is equipped with a triple-camera setup on the rear, which is made up of the following lenses:
- Main camera with 48 megapixels (f/1.8)
- Depth camera with f/2.4
- Macro camera with f/2.4
So, again, the features of the X8 are unfortunately undercut. The mid-range model from April relies on a quad camera, which consists of a 64-megapixel main camera (f/1.8), a 5-megapixel 120-degree wide-angle camera (f/2.2) and two 2-megapixel sensors for macro and bokeh shots. Even the front-facing camera’s 8-megapixel resolution is only half that of the X8’s 16-MP selfie camera.
Other features on the 194-gram X8 5G include a fingerprint sensor on the side, NFC, Wi-Fi ac and Bluetooth 5.1.
Price and availability
The Honor X8 5G will be offered in Midnight Black and Ocean Blue colors and is currently only listed on the global website of the manufacturer. However, it is unclear when and at what price the mid-range smartphone will be offered.
Considering the reduced features in many areas, the price could be lower than the RRP of the Honor X8, which was offered for 249 Euros (~$249) at the time.
