If you are planning to change your PC storage in 2022, you will get your money’s worth at the moment. After all, new storage devices are introduced on a daily basis. Patriot has now presented its P400, a model that clearly belongs to the mid-range. With speeds of up to 5,000 MB/s, the broad masses should be quite happy here.
Controller is a “half” secret
Patriot has not yet revealed which controller will be used in the new P400. As is so often the case, however, we can already make assumptions in this regard. Thus, the latest generation also has about the same values that we already know from the predecessor. The first generation was based on the Phison E16. Whether Patriot also uses exactly this model in its P400, we don’t know (yet) in the absence of more detailed information.
But there is one clue that almost certainly makes us think of the use of a Phison controller. Namely, the Patriot P400 is supposed to offer support for “SmartECC” according to the technical details. This is an in-house Phison feature, which can be found in the engine for correcting errors. Another hint is the support of NVMe 1.3. SSDs that rely on a controller in the form of the newer Phison E18 usually already offer the successor NVMe 1.4 and also manage higher transfer rates on top of that.
NAND also unknown
While we already know the data transfer rates, we unfortunately do not know which flash memory exactly Patriot uses here. The P400, which is optionally available with 512 GB or 1 TB, is supposed to bring it to 5,000 MB/s when reading, regardless of the memory size. However, it looks different when writing, since the smaller version performs much worse than the larger counterpart. If the 3,300 MB/s in writing prove to be true, the P400 with 512 GB would be about 1,500 MB/s slower than the model twice as big. In the area of Total Bytes Written, the picture is similar. While the small version only offers 400 TB, the 1 TB P400 scores with a TBW value of 800 TB, according to Patriot.
Price and Availability
Those interested in the new mid-range M.2 SSD can strike now. The 512 GB version of the Patriot P400 is currently available for just 90 Euros. The 1 TB version of the Patriot P400, on the other hand, starts at just under 150 Euros. However, since the flash storage has just come onto the market, we assume a quick price reduction.
