Smart #1: New electric SUV with up to 440 km range presented

The company has unveiled the Smart #1, a compact electric SUV that is said to have a range of up to 440 km on one battery charge. The e-car from the Mercedes-Benz AG subsidiary is scheduled to launch in Germany later this year.

Smart #1 in detail: all info on the E-SUV

The new Smart #1 is based on the concept of the Smart Concept #1, which the company had presented to the public at the IAA 2021. At a world premiere in Berlin, the production model has now been unveiled, heralding the company’s future.

Following the all-electric two-seater Smart EQ fortwo, the company is now launching the #1, a much larger car that is also all-electric and, of course, a (compact) e-SUV. The brand’s goal was to create an “urban companion.”

Particular emphasis was placed on the design of the #1, which focuses on a futuristic look.  Features include a front with rounded edges and special innovations such as electronic, lowered door handles with indirect lighting. They automatically detect when users approach with a key and then extend.

Other visual details include frameless doors and a floating halo glass roof. Inside, a floating center console, as well as a 12.8-inch touch display with 1920×1080 pixel resolution, catch the eye. Behind the steering wheel, a 9.2-inch display ensures that important information can be read.

Also on offer is individually adjustable ambient lighting with 64 colors and 20 lighting levels, as well as a premium audio system from Beats, which consists of an amplifier module and 13 speakers including a subwoofer.

The technical specifications of the Smart #1

The new Smart #1 is 4.27 meters long, has a wheelbase of 2.75 meters and uses a maximum of 19-inch rims. Thanks to extended 360-degree visibility and generous glass elements, the E-SUV allows an excellent rumble view.

The entry-level model is powered by a 200 kW electric motor, with a maximum torque of 343 Nm and a top speed of 180 km/h. The NCM battery offers an extended 360-degree view and generous glass elements. The NCM battery offers a capacity of 66 kWh and should enable a range of 420 km to 440 km, according to the manufacturer.

The #1 is charged with 150 kW in direct current and should thus be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in under 30 minutes. When charging via alternating current, a maximum of 22 KW is possible. Here, the Smart takes around three hours to charge from 10-80 percent.

The Smart #1 also has a convertible trunk. The sliding rear seat allows for a variable loading area. The seats are split 60:40 and can be pushed forward by up to 13 cm. This allows the E-SUV to achieve a trunk volume of 273 liters to a maximum of 411 liters.

Of course, the car is also equipped with all sorts of smart technology. For example, the E-SUV can also be opened via smartphone, while the digital key can also be shared via the personal Smart ID. The highest digital encryption standards ensure the highest possible security. Other features include AI-based voice control, or updating after delivery via over-the-air updates.

Prices and availability

The new Smart #1 is expected to be available in Germany from December 2022, as the ADAC reports. The manufacturer has not yet revealed official prices, but ADAC assumes a base price of between 35,000 euros and 40,000 euros based on the data available.
