Boneco H320 in the test: what can the air purifier for the apartment

The end of winter is just around the corner and with it the long-awaited spring is approaching. We can look forward not only to warmer temperatures, but also to the end of the cold season. At least if you are not a victim of hay fever yourself. After all, experience shows that the first warm days also bring the pollen count. Anyone who is out and about can hardly hide from the small annoying particles.

The traditional company from Switzerland already promises great things on the high-quality packaging.

But unfortunately, they also like to find their way into your own home. An air purifier is then the optimal solution. This washes, so to speak, the indoor air of your own four walls and not only humidifies it, but also frees it from pollen and other allergy-causing substances. The Boneco Hybrid H320 promises to be the guarantor of the best indoor climate in both the cold and warm seasons.

Thanks to the air purifier’s simple design, it’s easy to clean

On the one hand, it is supposed to provide air humidification. This prevents dry mucous membranes and thus reduces the risk of colds. On the other hand, according to the manufacturer, it offers a sophisticated filter system that filters out unhealthy substances from the air. Whether Boneco can keep these promises, we want to take a closer look in the test.

Air filter boom in Corona times

With the Corona pandemic, air filters experienced a real boom. The demand for the guarantors of clean indoor air increased immensely, especially in the cold months, as people wanted to do without regular shock ventilation of rooms. But even outside a pandemic situation, such air purifiers are quite advisable. Especially people who spend a lot of time in their own homes should ensure that a healthy indoor climate prevails.

The H320 promises an optimal combination of air purification and humidification

The Boneco H320 Hybrid is a true all-rounder in this regard. Unlike conventional humidifiers, it not only ensures that your mucous membranes are sufficiently humidified. It also removes allergy-causing substances from the air. Thus, especially asthmatics and people with house dust or pollen allergies should think about buying an air purifier.

Scope of delivery

The H320 is already assembled in the package. All you have to do here is unpack the pollen filter, fill it with water and you’re good to go.

There are no big surprises in the high-quality packaging. In addition to the Boneco H320 itself, you’ll only find the accompanying power supply, a quick start guide and safety instructions. The big advantage is that you don’t have to assemble the air purifier first. Boneco has already taken care of this.

Design and build quality

The Boneco 320 Hybrid was not designed for open-plan offices. This is evident not only in its size, but also in its design. After all, it doesn’t really have much to do with the industrial models that are capable of top performance. But it’s not supposed to be. Its goal is quite evident in its design. This air purifier should fit unobtrusively into a classic living ambience. This starts with the color scheme. White blends in beautifully with most homes.

There are vents on the right and left.

For example, the H320 can be placed in front of a white wall without attracting any attention at all. Unlike the H400, which we took a closer look at last year, the H320 is also a bit more compact. Its big brother measures 38 cm x 45 cm x 27 cm (W x H x D), while our review unit measures 28 cm x 46.5 cm x 43 cm. We also like the design better. Thus, the H320 Hybrid is kept oval and has an integrated water container, unlike the H400. This results in a more uniform look, which is pleasing.

View of the top

The white plastic makes a high-quality impression. This also applies to the rest of the device. All individual parts sit firmly in their intended position. Once the air purifier is completely assembled and filled with water, it will not fall over so quickly. This stability is important so that no mishap leads to possible water damage. It is questionable to what extent the white surface is suitable as a magnet for dirt. You will probably have to wipe it regularly to prevent ugly stains.

There is a nice design accent on the right side of the air purifier

Since Boneco integrates the water tank into the H320, the risk of spilled water has been effectively contained. We had to complain about the somewhat wobbly solution in the H400 during the corresponding test. But we also have to complain a bit about the H320. Unfortunately, Boneco also reveals some annoying gaps here, which might not be too noticeable visually. However, dirt particles could accumulate here, which does not really suit a product for clean air.

There are carrying handles on the left and right. Unfortunately, the large gaps can be a haven for dirt.

Incidentally, the traditional company from Switzerland retains the basic design of its chic air purifiers. This means that we also get to see a large black rotary knob as the main control element here. The feel of the large black circle is quite debatable. While the almost resistance-free turning might seem cheap to some, I found it very pleasant. Who can not jump over his shadow in this regard, but can also operate the air purifier via app.

Commissioning and control

Before we go into the operation of the H320, we first want to explain to you the so-called HYBRID system on which the air purifier is based. As the name suggests, two different functions are combined here. On the one hand, the H320 serves as an air humidifier. Alternatively, you can also use it as an air purifier. But what certainly the vast majority will do is use the device as a hybrid device.

The rotary knob is foolproof to use

In the process, it not only humidifies the air, but also frees it from hair, house dust and other larger dirt particles. While the pre-filter filters out coarse dirt, a downstream filter ensures that even viruses are removed from the air. Furthermore, bad odors are absorbed. Constant humidification of the air is ensured by the evaporator mat located on a rotating wheel. This circulates during operation and releases liquid into the air.

If you want to remove the lid, all you have to do is press on the left side of the lid

Since Boneco ships its H320 already assembled, you don’t really have to do much for the initial setup. Take another look under the lid of the device and check that everything is really in the right place. This is where Boneco’s illustrated instruction manual really paid off. Once everything is in place, you can easily fill the H320 with water. Once the water is in the unit, you just plug it into the power.

For the water tank, Boneco relies on an integrated solution. The red float indicates when the water tank is full

A look at the front of the H320 immediately makes it clear that the operation is by no means a witchcraft. The black rotary knob is, in a way, a combination instrument that not only allows you to regulate the power level of the device. On top of that, you can turn the H320 on or off at the touch of a button. By the way, the practical LEDs provide information about the current status of the air purifier. The more lines light up, the higher the performance. Here you have the choice between a total of six different levels.

Operation with Boneco app

Alternatively, you can also whip out your smartphone. This is especially handy if you just don’t feel like getting up from the couch. In the in-house Boneco app, which is available for Android and iOS, you’ll find just about every setting option you have on the device itself. On top of that, the software offers you practical additional information. In particular, the values of the built-in hygrometer can be read here. Depending on the humidity, you can then react accordingly and increase or decrease the level. The auto mode is particularly practical.

In this one, the H320 regulates itself and adjusts its own output to keep the desired humidity level constant at all times. But there are other modes as well. One mode that is especially interesting for young parents is the sleep mode or baby mode. Here, the device operates as quietly as possible so that air purification does not get in the way of a healthy sleep. Away from the lower operating noise, the brightness of the LEDs is also reduced. Unfortunately, you can still hear the H320 clearly even in sleep or baby mode. Those who are light sleepers should be aware of this.

Finally taking a deep breath?

After I had the H320 in endurance testing for a week, the question of air quality naturally arises. Has there been any improvement? Maybe I’m just imagining it, but I already feel like my indoor air is better now. Given the low temperatures, my windows were rather seldom open. But thanks to the H320, the effects were not that serious.

The fan has plenty of power

Especially when sleeping, the air purifier did a great job. Provided your bedroom is no larger than 50 m². According to the manufacturer, this is the maximum room size the H320 can handle. While I usually struggle with a scratchy throat after a night with the window closed, this was not the case thanks to the ample humidification.

What I really liked is the flexibility of the air purifier. It can be carried comfortably from A to B thanks to its weight of just 6.4 kg. The integrated hygrometer ensures that the air purifier then automatically and reliably adapts to new air conditions.

Uncomplicated cleaning

Boneco emphasizes the easy cleaning of the H320. This I can only confirm. Runs this finally idiot-proof. Who has a dishwasher, actually do not have to get their hands dirty. Except for the pre-filter, water tank and evaporator mat, everything can be conveniently cleaned in the dishwasher. For the rest, the good old hand wash comes into play.

Operating volume as Achilles heel

As we have already clarified, the air purifier from Boneco delivers the best results. However, we have to talk about one thing, unfortunately. And that is the volume that the Boneco H320 emits during its work. You have to complain about this at least when it goes into the realms of the high performance levels. The air purifier hardly disturbs on levels 1 and 2. Here, you only hear a slight hiss. However, if we are on the levels above, the air purifier gets louder bit by bit.

There is a small compartment at the back, which can be used for scented oils.

This should be known by all those who like to use the fan selectively and shy away from continuous operation. I recommend preferring constant operation on level 1 or 2. Otherwise, the H320 will quickly remind you of a vacuum cleaner. On the final electricity bill, you will hardly notice a difference, since the Boneco H320 works on the first two stages power saving.

Conclusion: wellness for the mucous membranes

The trend is towards having our own air filter. This is particularly due to the fact that we simply move less and less in the fresh air in the course of increasing home office. Should you also play with the idea of such a purchase, the Boneco H320 could well be the right device. In addition to a high-quality finish and a chic design, it scores especially in the discipline of air purification.

The heart of the air humidifier is the evaporation mat, which rotates like a water wheel through the water in the tank. This is also where a small silver pin (left) is located, which is supposed to ensure hygienically clean water.

At the same time, it can be easily operated by anyone thanks to idiot-proof operation on the device itself or via app. Different modes, which can be controlled via app, also ensure customized personal operation of the air purifier. The only drawback is the volume at which the H320 operates. Boneco should improve this a bit with regard to future devices. Who does not mind, which gets here the perfect guarantor for healthy indoor air.
