Scope of delivery

The included accessories for the Xming Q1 SE are very clear, yet include everything needed for operation. Among them, the power adapter with matching power cable and a very well described user manual. For better readability, pictures were inserted into the manual, which illustrate the individual steps very well. The manufacturer includes a black remote control for the control. Suitable batteries are not included and must accordingly still be inserted before use.

Design and build

The exterior of the Xming Q1 SE has a very compact design and therefore requires a sophisticated cooling system. For this, the projector has perforated areas on the front and back that allow air to circulate inside. The fan installed in the base sucks in fresh air at the back and blows the heated air out again at the front. The fan is clearly audible, but is drowned out by the played sounds.

If you take a closer look at the front, you will immediately notice the contrasting color of the lens unit. It is bordered with a silver stripe and gives the Q1 SE a sophisticated look. Below the lens we find the previously mentioned perforated area, which is important for the cooling system. The back also has a surprise in store. All available connectivity options are found on the back of the rear. Among them are USB 2.0, HDMI 1.4, an audio jack and the connection for the power cable. The power button is also located right next to the audio jack.

On the right and left side there are more perforated places, arranged in the upper half. Behind them hide the two 3 watt speakers, one on each side. Besides the speakers, other relevant components for the cooling system have been installed.

The top side holds a wheel, on which the focus can be adjusted. The lens can be controlled by this and the image can be adjusted to the distant wall. On the bottom, there are four rubberized feet, which provide a perfect grip on the surface. They protect against slight vibrations and provide a firm grip on the surface. On the other hand, a screwing option has been integrated into the base. This allows the Xming Q1 SE to be mounted on a photo tripod and you can now position the projector even more flexibly. Depending on the tripod, the construct can turn out to be sometimes more and sometimes less wobbly.

Workmanship

In terms of workmanship, the Xming Q1 SE stands up really well. The white plastic casing looks valuable and makes the compact device look very classy. Only at the transitions of the individual plastic parts can small points of criticism be seen. If you put it on and press the plastic a bit along the gap, it sometimes yields more and sometimes less. This is especially noticeable when you grab the Q1 with one hand and lift it. Overall, we can say that the build quality and the choice of materials are very successful and do not offer any major points of criticism.

Connectivity

For sharing a screen or playing media, the Xming Q1 SE has several options on offer. Starting with the conventional connection via an HDMI cable. The advantage here is that no remote control is needed, as the image is immediately shared as soon as the device is turned on. Additionally, pictures, videos, music tracks or documents can be fed in and played back directly via the USB port.

However, the big feature of the Xming Q1 SE is the wireless connection, which is possible from all Android or iOS devices after a short connection to the home WLAN. You simply navigate to the WLAN icon with the remote control and a selection between iOS and Android appears, where you select the desired system. Now, a small guide appears that shows the individual steps. If you follow the instructions and connect the projector to the WLAN, you can easily share the screen from your mobile device.

Operation

For controlling the projector, a remote control in noble black is included. This is absolutely needed, since on the device itself only the possibility of switching on or off is available. The remote control unfolds the full range of functions. For example, it can be used to conveniently switch between sources, the volume can be adjusted and the settings can now be customized to the user. Required and not included are two AAA batteries for the use of the remote control.

Sound and video quality

Despite the compact design, the projector surprised us in terms of video quality. The 1080p resolution combined with the projector does a good job of producing a sharp image. Based on the default settings, we can say that the color intensity convinced us. With a few settings, the image quality can be adjusted to one’s own requirements and to the environment. With a projection size of 40 to 120″, a wide variety of applications are possible.

Two integrated 3 watt speakers are responsible for the sound. You should be aware that you can’t expect a first-class sound. In our tests, we watched various videos and movies and can say that they still do a good job for their size. The sound does not seem tinny or scratchy. For our perception, the sound was perfectly sufficient and seemed rather flat and not very lively. Considering that the Xming Q1 SE is not a projector that you install permanently in your living room, but rather a device for presenting or watching movies in special places for us. Thus, we found it very pleasant that speakers were installed at all. If you still have higher audio demands, you can always connect the Q1 to an external sound system or other speakers.

Summary of the Xming Q1 SE

With the Xming Q1 SE, we took a look at a compact LED projector that comes with features like a wireless connection and built-in speakers. In our test, it could convince in terms of design and workmanship. Its compact design makes it easy to use everywhere, and the mounting option on a tripod is also very helpful. Even if this can turn out rather shaky due to the Q1’s own weight. As described in our review, the 3 watt speakers were convincing. As expected, no top sound can be detected, but they still do their job well and the fun of watching a movie is not diminished.

All in all, the Xming Q1 SE offers a healthy overall package for us, with which occasional use is really fun. Price-performance is right and this makes it a real recommendation among mini LED beamers for us.
