WD_BLACK SN750 SE in review – affordable PCIe Gen 4 SSD for gamers

Another SSD from the manufacturer Western Digital, the WD_BLACK SN750 SE, has been available since the summer. Well-informed readers will probably be familiar with the older WD_BLACK SN750, which we already had in our test in May 2019. While this represents one of the high-end PCIe Gen 3 SSD models, the SE is a PCIe Gen 4 SSD. Both models are aimed at gaming and hardware enthusiasts. Contrary to what you might think at first, the SE is not a successor, but both models are sold in parallel.

The WD_BLACK SN750 SE is available with 250 GB, 500 GB and 1 TB. Although it uses the fourth generation of the PCIe interface, read and write speeds are more reminiscent of the previous generation. These are now at a maximum of 3600 and 2830 MB/s, respectively. In addition, Western Digital does without a DRAM cache.

How well the WD_BLACK SN750 SE performs in the performance test and whether it offers added value compared to PCIe Gen 3 SSDs, we clarify on the basis of the 1 TB version in the following test.

The WD_BLACK SN750 SE is an NVMe SSD in the widely used M.2 2280 format. As already mentioned, the fourth generation PCIe is used here, and NVMe 1.4 is used as the protocol. Western Digital uses the fourth-generation Kioxia BiCS, a 96-layer 3D TLC NAND, for the flash memory. A DRAM cache, like the WD_BLACK SN750 without SE addition, is omitted. While this used to be mandatory for a high performance, the waiver will become more and more common in the future and standard in the long run, according to Western Digital.

The SSD’s max read and write speeds are 3600 and 2830 MB/s, respectively, although the fourth-generation PCIe interface offers a much higher bandwidth. This is slightly above the PCIe-3 high-end SSDs in reading, and even slightly below in writing. If you want more, you’ll have to reach for the WD_BLACK SN850.

Scope of delivery

The SN750 SE is shipped in a compact black box, whose design is reminiscent of the other WD_Black items. Besides the SSD itself, there is only a manual in it.

In keeping with the name, the M.2 SSD is completely black, with the white or orange lettering providing the only contrast. The PCB is equipped on one side. While there are two versions of the SN750, one with and one without a heat sink, the SN750 SE is only available without a heat sink.

Test system

Performancetest

For the performance comparison, we also relied on the benchmarks and programs AS SSD, CrystalDiskMark, ATTO Disk and HD Tune Pro for PCIe Gen 4 SSDs.

Gaming Mode for maximum performance

For the best performance, Western Digital recommends enabling Gaming Mode. This is supposed to prevent automatic standby and thus reduce latency, but it also increases power consumption. The gaming mode can be activated in the WD_BLACK SSD Dashboard. In case this option is not available a firmware update is needed beforehand.

Performance test results

In AS SSD, the WD_BLACK SN750 SE delivers a similar picture in all parts of the benchmark and usually ends up in the top places or at least in the upper third. There are no isolated outliers to the bottom here. Furthermore, the WD_BLACK SN750, which has been available for a longer time, is almost always beaten.

We achieve a similar result in CrystalDiskMark. We can confirm the manufacturer’s specifications of 3600 and 2830 MB/s for sequential read and write, respectively, and our rates only deviate slightly. We are 8 MB/s higher for reading and 30 MB/s lower for writing. In general, the SSD performs very well in CrystalDiskMark and is also ahead of the WD_BLACK SN750 in most cases.

The WD_BLACK SN750 SE also makes a good impression in the other benchmarks. It delivers a very solid performance in the ATTO disk benchmark, beats the WD_BLACK SN750 in writing, but remains clearly behind it in reading. The SE performs very well in the HD Tune, and it also convinces in read accesses.

The temperature was a maximum of 69°C during the test, without a heat sink, which is just within the specifications. If you frequently access the SSD in everyday life and regularly perform larger write processes, you should think about an additional passive cooling. Many current motherboards already have pre-installed heat sinks.

Overall, the SSD convinces with a very high performance that is above that of most PCIe Gen 3 SSDs. However, one should not be too dazzled by PCIe Gen 4, since the interface allows much more performance and the SSD is rather at the lower end with its specifications. The SN850, also from Western Digital, offers almost twice as high sequential read and write rates, for example.

Conclusion

The WD_BLACK SN750 SE convinces in the test with a mostly very good performance. In addition, it is very consistent and does not afford any downward outliers. The WD_BLACK SN750, which has already been available for 2 years, is beaten in most cases.

The SSD uses PCIe Gen 4 as an interface, but it is very far from its limit. It offers slightly more speed than PCIe Gen 3 SSDs in sequential reading, but it is partly behind them in writing. Thus, one should not expect miracles when switching. Gaming enthusiasts, who are also Western Digital’s target group, will be happy with the WD_BLACK SN750 SE, since the SSD does not have any real weaknesses and they will hardly benefit from more speed in everyday use. However, those who really need maximum performance should take a look at other PCIe Gen 4 SSDs, such as the much faster, but also more expensive, SN850.

If you are looking for a fast and affordable NVMe SSD that has PCIe Gen-4 but does not need to max it out, you should take a closer look at the WD_BLACK SN750 SE. Since the prices in the SSD market fluctuate a lot, you should always keep an eye on them. The gap to noticeably faster SSDs is sometimes only small.

Another SSD from the manufacturer Western Digital, the WD_BLACK SN750 SE, has been available since the summer. Well-informed readers will probably be familiar with the older WD_BLACK SN750, which we already had in our test in May 2019. While this represents one of the high-end PCIe Gen 3 SSD models, the SE is a PCIe … (Weiterlesen...)
