AGM Pad P2 Active Review: Robust tablet in a practical case

However, this inexpensive piece of technology also has a sibling to offer which, in addition to the advantages of the “basic version”, also has an extremely robust and practical case. In the AGM Pad P2 Active test, we take a closer look at whether the extra charge compared to the standard model is worth it.

AGM Pad P2 Active Review: Design and workmanship

AGM has made a name for itself in recent years with outdoor smartphones such as the G2 Guardian (Review) and the H6 (Review). With the AGM Pad P2 Active, the expert for rugged peripherals has once again launched an outdoor device on the market. This time, it is a tablet that is designed to withstand even the most adverse conditions.

Protection is provided by a thick cover, which should be able to withstand drops from a height of 1.2 m without any problems. But the protection comes at a price. The tablet and cover weigh over 1 kg. With a thickness of 21.3 mm, it is also anything but slim. But this can be remedied. If you don’t need the cover, you can simply remove it.

It was a bit fiddly the first time. But you quickly get the hang of it here. Without the cover, the tablet weighs just 565 g and is significantly thinner at 9.3 mm. Once you have removed the cover, you can also see the basic structure of the tablet. This is similar to that of the classic Pad P2. The selfie camera is located on the side of the screen rather than at the top.

The edges of the screen itself are not exactly slim, although this is appropriate for the price. The on/off button is located at the top right of the outdoor tablet. At the bottom, in addition to a 3.5 mm jack connection, there is also a USB-C port for charging the device. The volume rocker is located on the right-hand side of the casing and has a good pressure point.

If you turn the tablet upside down, you can see the camera. Even though it may seem like it, it is not made up of two lenses. Rather, it is the main camera, which has a resolution of 50 MP and the corresponding flash. As with the AGM Pad P2, the build quality of the outdoor version is just right. The surprisingly modern impression is only marred by the thick screen edges, which are sometimes thinner even on other inexpensive tablets.

AGM Pad P2 Active Review: focus on the outdoors

The highlight of the AGM Pad P2 Active is undoubtedly the cover, which is already attached to the tablet at the factory. The cover fulfills several purposes. Firstly, it offers comprehensive protection. With the protective cover fitted, the tablet meets the requirements for protection in accordance with the IP68 and IP69K standards.

The outdoor tablet even meets the MIL-STD-810H military standard. By comparison, the basic version of the P2 offers protection in accordance with the IP68 standard. The extensive protection not only ensures that you can drop the tablet in its padded case from heights of 1.2 m without fear of damage.

Diving is no problem either. The outdoor tablet can withstand water depths of up to 1.5 m. Furthermore, the P2 Active works at operating temperatures between -20°C and 60°C. As already mentioned, it is not just protection that plays a major role in the case. The nickname “Active” is no coincidence.

After all, the case has a few cool features to offer that are particularly useful when you’re on the move. Firstly, there is the stand, which can be rotated 360°. With its help, you can place the tablet on pretty much any surface and use it as a practical screen. But the stand also serves another purpose.

AGM also includes a practical shoulder strap

This means you can also use it as a handle to carry the tablet. The whole thing is even more comfortable with the included shoulder strap. With its help, you can simply hang the tablet over your shoulder. This is practical for anyone who has to walk around with the tablet all day for work or leisure.

AGM Pad P2 Active test: The cover falls quickly

The AGM Pad P2 Active is an extremely robust tablet. However, the protection of the device is primarily provided by the cover. However, the cover of the Pad P2 Active is not permanently attached to the device. Instead, you can easily remove the cover. This is a special feature. Many comparable models do not rely on a robust cover, but instead design the entire case in an outdoor style.

Of course, this also provides a high level of protection. The big disadvantage, however, is that the large case is always there. However, if you want to relax on the couch in the evening and surf the World Wide Web, you don’t need the protection at all. You can significantly reduce the weight of the AGM Pad P2 Active by removing the case, which makes it more comfortable to use at home and allows you to use the tablet flexibly.

AGM Pad P2 Active Review: Hardware

At the heart of the tablet is a MediaTek G99, which offers a maximum clock speed of 2.2 GHz. This was already able to score points with solid performance in the Pad P2. And this is also the case here. The tablet does an excellent job with everyday applications such as surfing the web, online shopping or office programs.

But this piece of outdoor hardware also scores highly when it comes to entertainment. Streaming and playing small games was no problem at all in the test. The Pad P2 Active offers various options for good audio. In addition to the classic 3.5 mm jack connection, there is also Bluetooth 5.2 for wireless headphones.

If you don’t fancy headphones, you can also use the integrated stereo speakers. The MediaTek is supported by 8 GB of RAM ex works. This can be virtually expanded to up to 16 GB RAM. The storage space of 256 GB is also sufficient. If that’s not enough, you can expand it to a maximum of 2 TB using a TF memory card.

AGM Pad P2 Active Review: Display

The AGM Pad P2 Active comes with an 11-inch display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels.

In practice, this scores with beautiful, vivid colors that are quite impressive. I also like the refresh rate of 90 Hz. Moving images are reproduced without distortion.

The display is not very easy to see in strong sunlight

There are only problems in direct sunlight. Here, the screen brightness of 480 nits is simply not sufficient and the display is dazzled.

AGM Pad P2 Active Review: Camera

You shouldn’t expect miracles from the camera. AGM also uses the technology of the standard version here. The main camera, which has a resolution of 50 MP, is located on the back. The flash is located underneath so that it can also take reasonably good pictures in the dark.

Unfortunately, the image results are blurred and lack detail. For an occasional snapshot, however, this is certainly sufficient for many people. However, if you attach great importance to good camera quality, you’re in the wrong place here. The selfie camera on the front offers 8 MP.

Selfies taken with it suffer from the same problems. However, it is more than sufficient for the occasional self-portrait. It is also possible to record videos. The AGM Pad P2 Active enables recordings with a resolution of 1,080p at a frame rate of 30 frames per second.

AGM Pad P2 Active Review: battery and connectivity

The outdoor tablet from AGM is also impressive in terms of connectivity. In addition to 4G/LTE, you also get 5G support. To help you find your way around on your outdoor adventures, a compass and GPS are of course also included. I also don’t want to forget that the device has a dual SIM slot.

This allows it to be used for both private and professional life, for example. The 8,000 mAh battery should ensure endurance. This makes it slightly larger than that of the Pad P2. In practice, however, I didn’t notice much difference. With average use, two days of use are possible without a charging break. If you need to take a break from charging, you can benefit from the quick-charging function with 20 watts of power.

Conclusion

Are you looking for a tablet that is perfect for your weekend outdoor adventures or your day-to-day work on the construction site? Then the AGM Pad P2 Active is the right choice for you. Of course, you won’t get high-end hardware, but the MediaTek processor will be perfectly adequate for the average consumer.

The highlight of the device is the practical and robust cover. The tablet can withstand even adverse conditions without any problems. Only the camera is really weak. However, it is certainly sufficient for a snapshot in between. If you don’t need the extensive protection, I recommend choosing the much cheaper standard version without the case.

The AGM Pad P2 Active is a very good outdoor tablet that offers high durability and solid hardware. Only the weak camera tarnishes the otherwise positive impression.
