The Gigabyte Aorus 15G doesn’t only want to score with current hardware, but also with a lot of features. Besides the new Comet Lake H processors and an RTX Super graphics card, there is also a mechanical keyboard and much more on board. Packaging and accessories
A simple cardboard box in which the Aorus 15G is waiting for you, well padded. What more can you expect. You get a high-end device without a lot of frills. Of course, the box contains the power supply and some paperwork. One highlight is a small cooling pad for an M.2 SSD, an unexpected addition.
Features
Our tested model is the Aorus 15G XB. The processor used is an Intel i7-10875H, along with 16 GB of DDR4 memory. The graphics unit is a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super in Max-Q design with 8 GB GDDR6 graphics memory. To handle the power of the hardware, an M.2 SSD with 512 GB is installed.
The cooperation with the professionals of G2 Esports is also noticeable in the equipment. The 15.6 inch display has only a FullHD resolution, but is X-Rite-Pantone certified. This ensures good color reproduction for photo and video editing. Depending on the model, the display has a refresh rate of 144 Hz; our model even manages 240 Hz.
The Aorus 15G also has sufficient connections. Three USB 3.2 and one Thunderbolt 3 ports offer enough space to connect peripherals, for example. There are also two additional connections for additional monitors, one HDMI 2.0 and one Mini Display Port 1.4. Network technology from Killer provides connectivity. The E2600 is used as the network card, while an AX1650 provides the Wi-Fi connection.
The HD camera is also worth mentioning. Although it is only an HD camera, it is perfectly sufficient for simple video conferences. However, the camera is not mounted on the display, but above the keyboard. But much more important is the device to cover the camera.
As a highlight, the mechanical keyboard with switches from Omron should also be mentioned. According to Gigabyte, this makes the Aorus 15G the lightest and thinnest gaming notebook with a mechanical keyboard. And the keyboard is really good. A good stroke, the stroke distance isn’t too long, but it still has the feel of a normal mechanical keyboard.
Design and workmanship
The case of the Gigabyte Aorus 15G consists of a CNC-milled aluminum housing. It offers a very good stability and the silver tone fits well into the overall concept. Even the hinges of the display are very torsion resistant and hold the display in the desired position without wobbling. And even though there’s plenty of power hidden inside, the size is kept within limits. At 356 x 250 x 25 mm (W x D x H) you don’t have a battleship with you, but a compact device, and it even weighs only 2.2 kg.
An illuminated Aorus logo is attached to the lid. It is not configurable, but fits well into the design. The mechanical keyboard brings more color into play. You can choose from ready-made effects via the Aorus Control Center (colors are customizable) or create your own custom lighting configurations.
The numerous ventilation slots are conspicuous. Since the hardware has a lot of power, it has to be cooled properly. We can really find some on each side of the case. They give the Aorus 15G a striking design that immediately catches the eye.
The touchpad of the gaming notebook has a very pleasant size and is easy to use. Mouse clicks are always accepted correctly. The fingerprint sensor can be seen as an advantage or disadvantage, personal opinion certainly plays into this. I personally like to unlock a notebook without entering a password or PIN, and as a gamer you usually use a real mouse anyway.
Display
The Aorus 15G XB has 15.6 inches and relies on FullHD resolution. Many gaming notebooks offer 144 hertz displays, the tested model even has 240 hertz and relies on an IGZO display. A special feature is the X-Rite Pantone certification. The display should be especially suitable for professional photo and video editing, together with the hardware, photographers or content creators, for example, can only benefit from it.
To work well in direct sunlight, the display is matt. Even in direct sunlight you can still see enough on the display. The brightness could be a bit higher, but who likes to gamble in the sun?
Software
The Aorus Control Center is an all-round talent. In the Smart Dashboard we get a rough system overview with temperatures and utilization of different components. App Shortcuts should help you to keep track of your most used programs. The Windows start menu is perhaps the better alternative here. In the Manager we can quickly and easily switch off various functions, such as WiFi or Bluetooth.
The section Fusion is responsible for the keyboard. Here you can adjust the lighting according to your own wishes. But also the programming of macros is possible, as well as switching off the Windows key.
To control the fans you can select different profiles under Device Settings. There you can define the temperature and speed at which the fans should start to rotate. Especially for working the profile “Quiet” is gold. Under Smart Utilities there are several small functions. For example you can see directly the update status of the installed drivers on the Aorus 15 or start a system backup.

Performance in practical test
System performance
The Aorus 15G XB can be shown. Not only the exterior, but also the hardware is convincing. An RTX 2070 Super combined with an i7-10875H provides a lot of power under the hood. Current games are even in high resolution and with many details absolutely no problem for the notebook from Gigabyte.

Gaming performance
Even 4K resolutions can be played without problems on the Aorus 15G, although not at the highest detail levels. Otherwise, good FPS values are really achieved in every game.

Battery life and volume
At full speed the fans are more than clearly audible. But for that the Aorus 15G is properly ventilated. The fans are almost silent in quiet mode, though. In automatic mode, the fans often turn too fast in my opinion. If you gamble without headphones, the gaming experience is significantly reduced.
Conclusion
There is no question that this hardware has a lot of power under the hood. Gigabyte also delivers a decent amount of quality with the Aorus 15G, including many features. A CNC-machined aluminum case and a 240 Hz X-Rite Pantone certified display, together with decent hardware, result in the lightest gaming notebook with a mechanical keyboard.
